Lead with purpose in one of Queensland's most culturally rich and naturally stunning communities and ensure Mapoon enjoys a bold new future.

About Council

Mapoon Aboriginal Shire Council serves a proud and growing Indigenous community on the western coast of Cape York. With deep roots in the heritage of the Tjungundji people and other Traditional Owners, Mapoon is a place of resilience, opportunity, and transformation. The Council, led by the Mayor and four Councillors, is committed to sustainable development, cultural preservation, and empowering its people. With major infrastructure projects underway and a strong vision for economic growth, Mapoon is entering an exciting new chapter—and you could be at the helm.

The Role

This is more than a leadership position—it is a chance to shape the future of a community. As Chief Executive Officer, you will be the principal advisor to the Mayor and Councillors, responsible for driving the strategic direction of Council and ensuring high-quality service delivery. You will lead an enthusiastic team, oversee financial and operational sustainability, and foster meaningful relationships with Traditional Owners, residents, government partners, and industry stakeholders.

Your focus will include rebuilding key functions like HR and Finance within the community, reviewing procurement and contractor transparency, and ensuring cultural appropriateness is embedded in all Council activities. You will also play a pivotal role in workforce development, creating pathways for local people to thrive in trades and professional roles.

The Person

Regarded as a seasoned executive with a genuine commitment to community-led outcomes your leadership style is inclusive, principled, and grounded in integrity. With a wealth of experience in local government or a related environment, you will understandably have a strong grasp of governance, financial management, and stakeholder engagement.

You are not afraid to roll up your sleeves, have the tough conversations, and lead with both heart and strategy. With a deep understanding around the importance of cultural sensitivity, transparency, and building trust you have tertiary qualifications in management, planning, engineering or similar and you are ready to take on a role that demands both vision and action.

Why This Role?

Mapoon offers a lifestyle and leadership opportunity like no other. Nestled along the coast, the community is renowned for its fishing, natural beauty, and welcoming spirit. You will live in a fully furnished, high-set CEO residence, enjoy the support of a financially viable Council and execute a pipeline of exciting projects.

This is your chance to make a real difference—leading a Council that values inclusion, accountability, and service. You will be part of a team that is building something special, with strong networks across Cape York and a commitment to growth through tourism, infrastructure, and cultural engagement.
