ABOUT UNIONS TASMANIA

Unions Tasmania is the peak body for trade unions in Tasmania. For over 140 years, we have been giving a voice to working Tasmanians and their families. We represent approximately 50,000 union members, across the private and public sector, in workplaces big and small.

Unions Tasmania has been funded to implement an information and education capability in Tasmania, covering metropolitan, regional and remote locations, where temporary migrant workers are employed. Unions Tasmania has partnered with the Migrant Worker Centre (Victoria) and the Immigration Advice and Rights Centre (NSW) to deliver this project.

Project activities include:

  • Developing information and education resources to provide:

  • temporary visa holders working in Australia with an awareness and understanding of migration-related workplace rights and obligations

  • employers of temporary visa holders with an awareness and understanding of migration-related employer obligations
  • Proactively delivering this information and education equitably to temporary visa holders and their employers (including both union and non-union members), in an effective, trustworthy and accessible manner.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Working within a small team, the Community Organiser will deliver engagement and education activities in Tasmania, reporting to the Project Coordinator. The role has responsibility for connecting directly with migrant workers and their employers, providing clear and accessible information, and ensuring workers and employers are supported to understand, uphold, and act on their workplace rights and obligations.

The Community Organiser will work within a small team to:

  • Deliver education and information to temporary visa holders and employers on migration-related workplace rights and obligations
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the community engagement strategy, including identifying emerging issues and supporting the communication strategy
  • Work collaboratively with community leaders, migrant communities, unions, service providers and other organisations to create opportunities for delivering accurate information and education in accessible, and culturally appropriate ways
  • Identify and support emerging leaders within migrant communities to strengthen community education

There are three (3) Community Organiser positions available, to be employed at level 6-7 depending on skills and experience.

We strongly encourage applications from people with lived experience as migrant workers, or from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. This experience brings valuable perspectives to this work, so we encourage you to apply even if you don't meet every selection criterion.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

We are looking for people who can:

  • Work collaboratively and effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, such as migrant communities, community leaders, unions, and service providers
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully, including with people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds
  • Deliver workshops and information sessions in accessible and culturally appropriate ways
  • Keep accurate records and use digital tools (e.g. a CRM or other system) to track engagement and outcomes
  • Demonstrate understanding of union values and the context of workers' rights
  • Adapt quickly, take initiative, and contribute to a small, collaborative team

It will also be an advantage if you have:

  • Language skills or strong community connections relevant to temporary migrant worker groups in Tasmania
  • Knowledge of migration-related workplace rights and employer obligations (or the ability to develop this knowledge quickly)

OTHER RELEVANT INFORMATION

  • Applicants must have a current and valid driver's license
  • Applicants must be able on occasion to work after business hours and on the weekend
  • Applicants must have a valid visa that provides work rights or be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
