Senior Legal Counsel - Energy Regulation 5 + PQE

Our client is a key player in Australia's energy transition, partnering with governments on critical infrastructure programs to deliver a net-zero energy system. As coal plants retire, they support the coordination of investment in transmission, generation, storage and firming of energy infrastructure.

Position Description

As a Senior Legal Counsel within this industry leading Legal Energy Team, you will play a vital role in supporting Australia's energy transition. Collaborating closely with senior lawyers, leadership, and external stakeholders in government and industry, you will deliver high-quality legal advice on complex, high-impact energy projects. This role offers a unique opportunity to shape cross-jurisdictional energy policy, tackle novel legal challenges, and develop your skills in a collaborative and inclusive culture.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Provide legal advice on compliance with the National Electricity Law, National Gas Law, and related regulations to ensure the business's decisions align with statutory requirements
  • Monitor and analyse changes in Australian energy legislation and policies so as to best advise senior management on potential impacts and required adjustments
  • Advise on legal and regulatory risks in areas such as market competition, consumer protection, and network reliability
  • Provide advice areas including regulated pricing mechanisms, network access agreements, and cost recovery frameworks
  • Collaborate with the broader legal team on identifying all legal requirements for energy infrastructure developments
  • Provide legal support on cross-border energy issues and market harmonization
  • Collaborate with internal teams to develop and implement compliance programs, including training sessions for the broader business, and
  • Liaise with external stakeholders, including government agencies, industry participants, and legal counsel

Ideal Candidate:

The successful candidate will have:

  • 6 + years PQE from an established energy team in private practice or in-house
  • A detailed understanding of the National Electricity Law, the National Gas Law and the National Energy Retail Law, and
  • An ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders in a dynamic environment.
