About This Opportunity

Join a leading university as a Senior Technical Officer in Food Technology, where you'll provide expert technical support for teaching and research, maintain laboratory and field equipment, and ensure safe, effective operation of facilities. Based at St Lucia with occasional travel to Gatton Campus or remote sites, this hands-on role offers variety, collaboration, and the chance to contribute to innovative food science education and research.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Plan, coordinate, and deliver technical support for practical classes in food science, regularly updating manuals and supporting tutor training and excursion coordination.

  • Provide high-level technical advice to coursework and research students, including lab inductions, experimental design input, and training in specialised techniques.

  • Acquire and maintain consumables, specimens, and reference materials for practical and research use.

  • Supervise the operation and upkeep of teaching and research facilities, ensuring safe work practices, cleanliness, and compliance with UQ and statutory guidelines.

  • Manage lab equipment and assets, oversee procurement, cost recovery, and support audits, while coordinating minor works with facilities staff and contractors.

  • Ensure OHS compliance in all food science areas, supporting safe chemical and equipment handling, and monitoring practices in line with legislation and UQ policies.

About You

  • Completion of a Bachelor degree with specialisation in food science and technology or related disciplines with subsequent relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education and training.

  • Demonstrated broad knowledge in the fields of food process engineering, food materials science, food formulation, food physicochemical analysis and food safety.

  • Knowledge and skills in relevant laboratory techniques, including operation and maintenance of homogenisers, spray drier, microfluidiser, UHT pilot plant, rheometer and various analytical instruments, as well as design and execution of experiments.

  • Experience or proven ability to acquire and exercise skills in managing laboratories and field sites for teaching and research in accordance with internal and external policies, standards and guidelines.

  • Proficient in working with, undergraduate and postgraduate students and supporting their learning needs with appropriate technical and scientific advice and training.

  • Experienced and skilled in Microsoft Office applications. Willing and able to operate in a digital environment, including use of Microsoft Teams and shared files. .

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills. Able to work harmoniously and productively with a range of different academic staff, technical team colleagues, and other professional support staff.

  • Knowledge, or the ability to acquire knowledge, of the University's policies and procedures relating to Occupational Health and Safety, the Risk Assessment database, and the on-line Purchasing system.

The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, criminal check, education check, AHPRA registration, mandatory immunisations, first aid and/or CPR certification, blue card check, etc.
