Business Overview:
A-Star Sports Nets is a leading force in Australian sports facilities, specialising in sports netting solutions for elite-level clubs and organisations across the AFL, NRL, Cricket, Rugby, Soccer, Golf as well as world-class facilities for private schools, councils, and high-end commercial projects. Based in Carrum Downs, Melbourne with a growing presence in Sydney, we deliver cutting-edge projects that shape the future of Australian sports facilities.
We're looking for someone who lives and breathes the values that drive our owner and the culture of A-Star Sports. Leading with strength, fairness, and loyalty, A-Star Sports fosters a team-first ethic—celebrating wins collectively and using losses as opportunities for growth. This culture of care and accountability sets the tone for everything we do.
We're seeking someone who values honesty and integrity, embraces total accountability, demonstrates discipline, and takes pride in hard work. A person who isn't afraid to admit when they're wrong, welcomes feedback without hesitation, and maintains a genuine growth mindset. Above all, someone who is passionate about their career, enjoys the workplace, and leads with energy and consistency
Position Overview:
The General Manager Operations is a pivotal leadership role, bridging the gap between the owner's strategic vision and the day-to-day execution of projects, operations, and team leadership. It is important to note that the owner is to define the overall direction, growth strategy, and core priorities of the business, as well as acting as the primary estimator responsible for all quotes. Reporting directly to the owner, you will take full ownership of operational leadership, overseeing both the Site Manager and the warehouse and production team.
The Site Manager, under your guidance, will manage a small team of installers, handling all aspects of on-site execution while you provide support in driving the works schedule and resolving complex technical construction challenges as needed. Beyond that, you'll ensure that all aspects of team leadership, training, and accountability align with best practices whilst mentoring the Site Manager on performance management, workplace culture, the proper use of emails and databases, and professional development. Simultaneously, you will be responsible for optimising warehouse and production processes, ensuring they function seamlessly and efficiently in alignment with broader business goals.
As General Manager, you will also be responsible for working closely with the leader of Accounts and Administration to implement systems, maximise software, database utilisation, continuously refine safety processes and to run all new business projects from inception to completion. Additionally, you'll oversee the effectiveness of our marketing efforts, ensuring they remain modern, targeted, and actively drive business success. At times, you may also be required to assist with quoting and tendering for work, as determined by Anthony based on workload demands.
Beyond operations, your role extends to financial and resource management, ensuring budgets are adhered to and resources are allocated effectively. You will drive scheduling, procurement, quality control, and problem-solving to ensure smooth project execution. Ultimately, this role is about ensuring A-Star Sports operates as a high-performing, well-structured business where projects are delivered efficiently, teams are well-led, and the owner's strategic vision is executed flawlessly.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Tactical & Operational Execution
- Oversee daily business operations, including scheduling, procurement, and project coordination.
- Manage quality and design control as well as construction troubleshooting on active projects to ensure efficiency and excellence.
- Establish and maintain safety systems, ensuring compliance and best practices across all job sites.
- Ensure all administration and project management systems are properly utilised to maintain efficiencies and streamlined workflows.
- Work closely with the Site Foreman and warehouse staff to ensure seamless project execution and team alignment.
2. Software & Database Management
- Ensure Tradify and all project management software systems are used correctly and consistently by all staff.
- Ensure up-to-date, easy-to-read entries for accurate job tracking, reporting, and decision-making.
- Require photos, updates, and clear documentation for every job to improve accountability and workflow transparency.
3. Strategic Growth & Business Development
- Execute and drive the business owner's vision for growth, ensuring we capitalise on key opportunities.
- Implement strategies for expanding into the Sydney market, building a business case for economies of scale, including staffing, storage, accommodation, tools, and subcontractors.
- Help strengthen the business's brand, marketing presence, and professional image, ensuring we are recognized as an industry leader.
- Develop and execute social media, marketing, and branding strategies that align with our growth goals.
4. Sales, Tendering & Client Management
- Assist with tendering, quoting, and sales, ensuring competitive and profitable project wins.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, suppliers, and subcontractors.
- Identify and capitalise on new business opportunities to increase revenue and expand our market share.
5. Leadership & Team Development
- Provide clear leadership and structure, ensuring alignment with business goals.
- Maintain a strong chain of command, with the Site Foreman executing on-the-ground operations while the GM focuses on strategy and oversight.
- Foster a high-performance culture, ensuring accountability, productivity, and growth.
What We're Looking For:
- Experience: Minimum 7+ years in operations management, project management, or general management within the construction, civil, or trades industry.
- Education: Relevant qualifications in Construction Management, Business Administration, Project Management, or a related field.
- Financial Oversight: Understanding of budgeting, cost control, and financial reporting in a construction or trade-based business.
Tickets and Qualifications (any required tickets or certifications you don't currently have can be obtained after joining A-Star).
- A valid motor vehicle licence is required for site visits, team oversight, and client meetings.
- First Aid
- White card
- Working with Childrens check
Other:
- Proven experience in operations, project management, or general management in the construction or trade industry.
- Strong ability to balance tactical execution with strategic initiatives.
- Experience in scheduling, procurement, quality control, and problem-solving.
- A leader who can drive marketing, sales, and business growth efforts.
