About the opportunity

NSW Health Pathology is seeking a proactive and solution-oriented Medical Laboratory Technician to join our Central Specimen Reception team at Westmead Hospital – ICPMR. This is a fantastic opportunity for a dedicated professional who thrives in a fast-paced laboratory environment and is passionate about delivering high-quality diagnostic services.

In this role, you will contribute directly to patient care, work collaboratively with pathologists, scientists, technical assistants, and healthcare professionals to ensure the timely and efficient processing of patient specimens. The ideal candidate will possess strong critical thinking, communication, organisation skills and have excellent attention to detail to help maintain the accuracy and integrity of our daily operations.

The Central Specimen Reception (CSR) service unit is part of the Institute of Clinical Pathology and Medical research (ICPMR) in the Western Sydney Local Health District. The service unit runs 24 hours, 7 days a week at Westmead Hospital to provide a quality, timely and efficient service to all clients of ICPMR and the surrounding West network.

What you'll be doing

Perform a range of supervisory and technical tasks in the Central Specimen Reception Department by applying established methods and procedures, as directed. Duties include the supervision and delegation of specimen reception tasks and workflow, training of technical assistant staff, taking part in the initial data entry and processing of specimens, verification of specialised test results, preparation of materials and the maintenance of equipment in line with established laboratory processes, procedures and protocols.

  • Minimum qualification of Diploma in Laboratory Technology or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution with subjects relevant to pathology or medical laboratory operations
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the delivery of pathology services within a discipline relevant to the department, including use of Laboratory Information Systems, Patient Systems and Quality Systems
  • Demonstrated experience in the supervision of laboratory staff and the ability to work in a responsible and efficient manner, managing competing priorities to meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment whilst working autonomously to deliver results within specified timeframes set to meet client expectations
  • Customer focused approach displaying well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with customers and patients as well as clinical laboratory staff
  • Display initiative, problem solving and analytical skills including an ability to apply established principles in a pathology laboratory and investigate and resolve general and complex issues within the laboratory environment
  • Commitment to the principles of quality management and continuous quality improvement and to identify, develop and implement quality and service improvement activities
  • Ability to participate in a 24/7 rotating shift roster including night shift, weekends and public holidays with no restrictions
