Primary objective

The Women's Safe House team provide services to remote Aboriginal women and their children escaping family violence by supporting

women and children with emergency accommodation.

Context statement

The Women's Safe Houses aim to increase safety options for women and their children escaping family violence by providing crisis

accommodation and programs to women and their children in remote communities across the Northern Territory. The Safe House Team

works closely with Police, Night Patrol, Community Health Centre and other services to support women who seek crisis accommodation

and aim to strengthen their on-going safety in the community. The Safe Houses are open during weekdays. An on-call service is available

after-hours and on the weekend to provide timely assistance to women and their children requiring crisis accommodation.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. To provide a safe, welcoming and supportive environment to women and their children in the Women's Safe House.

2. To provide short term crisis accommodation for remote Aboriginal women and their children escaping family violence.

3. To provide support, advice and referrals to remote Aboriginal women and their children to access community-based services in

relation to family violence.

4. In partnership with the Team Leader, build good working relationships with Police, Night Patrol and Community Health Centres.

5. Assist women in the Safe Houses to make safety plans for themselves and their children.

6. Completing, faxing and filing forms; for example, timesheets, intake forms, rosters and store orders.

7. To work closely with the visiting Team Leader and to maintain regular contact by phone and fax.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Demonstrated local knowledge of remote Aboriginal communities, cultural and family relationships and the ability to speak the

Aboriginal languages specific to the community and or region.

2. Knowledge of the impact of family violence on remote Aboriginal family life and an ability to talk with clients and to assist them to

plan for their future safety.

3. Ability to work with minimal supervision, use initiative, be flexible, and maintain confidentiality and to uphold communications with a

supervisor based centrally.

4. Ability to make the Safe House a welcoming and safe place for the clients.

5. Ability to complete forms, fax the forms to the Team Leader on time and store in the filing cabinet.

6. Ability to work as a member of a team including both the Team Leader and other Safe House Workers.

7. A willingness to do training in line with the job. This may involve travel by either vehicle or plane, including overnight stays away from

community.

8. An ability to interact effectively with people of diverse cultures.

Desirable

Certificate III in Community Services Work or equivalent or willingness to undertake studies
