The role
This is an Aboriginal Identified role where Aboriginal identity, cultural knowledge or connections are a genuine aspect of the role. Positions are specifically noted under the provisions of the NSW Anti-discrimination Act
We need someone to bring their cultural capability and lived experience as an Aboriginal person to this role. As part of the recruitment process, we will ask you to provide documentation to confirm your Aboriginality and your capability will also be assessed through the recruitment process.
The Engagement Officer role focuses on supporting the Department's Native Title team by leading projects and engagement activities that strengthen relationships with Aboriginal communities across NSW. You'll work alongside stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered in a way that respects cultural knowledge and priorities, while providing clear advice and practical solutions.
The work involves navigating complex and sensitive issues, managing timeframes, and building trust through open and respectful communication. Success means listening deeply, applying guidelines thoughtfully, and creating outcomes that reflect the voices and aspirations of Aboriginal peoples.

What you will bring to the role
- Strong cultural knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal communities, governance structures, and protocols, with a commitment to respectful engagement.
- Proven ability to manage projects from planning through delivery, including monitoring progress and meeting deadlines.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills to foster trust and navigate sensitive discussions with diverse stakeholders.
- Analytical and problem-solving capability to interpret guidelines, provide accurate advice, and develop practical solutions in complex situations.
- Adaptability and resilience to work across diverse contexts, respond to changing priorities, and maintain professionalism under pressure.
What is an essential requirement:
- This is an Identified role under the Section 14d of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 and as such Aboriginality is an essential requirement of the role. Aboriginal identified positions are developed where Aboriginal identity, cultural knowledge or connections are a genuine aspect of the role. Positions are specifically noted under the provisions of the NSW Anti-discrimination Act for Aboriginal people who meet the following criteria:
- is of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, and
- identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, and
- is accepted as a such by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community.
- Sensitivity to and understanding of Aboriginal Culture and an excellent understanding of Aboriginal community governance and structures.
- Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline and/or demonstrated equivalent industry or professional experience in the relevant area
- This role requires extensive travel within NSW and a current NSW Driver's Licence
