Senior Legal Counsel - Front-End Construction 8 + PQE

Our client, a leading contractor with over 50 years of transformative contributions to Australia's infrastructure and resource sectors, is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to join their Sydney team. With a strong presence in renewable energy, rail, and public infrastructure, they offer unparalleled expertise and an exciting pipeline of high-profile projects.

As Senior Legal Counsel, you will join a well-established, dynamic legal team, providing strategic legal support for high-value construction projects across Australia. Reporting directly to the Group General Counsel, you will play a pivotal role in shaping front-end construction matters, ensuring compliance, and driving project success. This is a unique opportunity to work on landmark projects, collaborate with industry leaders, and advance your career in a supportive, innovative environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft, review, and negotiate complex construction contracts, including design, procurement, and build agreements, ensuring alignment with Australian legal standards.
  • Provide expert legal advice on project structuring, risk allocation, and contract terms during the pre-construction phase.
  • Identify and mitigate legal risks related to project financing, permits, and regulatory approvals.
  • Collaborate closely with project managers and engineers to align contract terms with technical and operational requirements.
  • Conduct thorough due diligence on subcontractors, suppliers, and joint venture partners to ensure contractual integrity.
  • Prepare and review tender documents, ensuring clarity, precision, and legal robustness in bidding processes.
  • Stay abreast of industry-specific legal developments, including changes in construction standards and renewable energy regulations.
  • Support corporate governance, compliance, and risk management initiatives.

Ideal Candidate
You will bring:

  • 8+ years PQE in construction law, gained from a top-tier private practice or a reputable in-house legal team.
  • Exceptional communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced, project-driven environment, both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • A proactive, solutions-oriented approach with a passion for delivering commercial outcomes.
