About the School
Hester Hornbrook Academy is an independent, Special Assistance School that delivers flexible, inclusive education for young people aged 15–25 across multiple campuses in Greater Melbourne. Our school provides "Wellbeing for Learning and Learning for Wellbeing," supported by our trauma-informed HOPE (Healing Oriented Program of Education) model.
We support students who face significant barriers to traditional education, offering a safe, respectful, and engaging environment that integrates academic learning with wellbeing and life skills. Through VPC (Victorian Pathways Certificate), VM (VCE Vocational Major), and VETiS (Vocational Education and Training in Schools), we help our students thrive, and we are growing.
POSITION PURPOSE
The School Speech Pathologist's role purpose is to:
- Assess, diagnose and deliver targeted evidence based interventions with Hester Hornbrook students (individually or through group work) across all campuses to enhance students ability to strengthen their communication and language skills to increase their capacity to engage and attend school.
- Work collaboratively with all internal and external stakeholders to enhance understanding around speech, language, communication, and social interaction skills to promote inclusive practices that empowers students to develop essential communication skills to support their personal growth, learning, and long-term wellbeing.

- Assess students' speech, language, communication, and social interaction skills, providing clear reports and strategies for classroom teams.
- Deliver individual and group therapy for students with complex communication needs, using evidence-based approaches to support language, social skills, emotional regulation, and confidence.
- Collaborate with learning leaders to design personalised strategies that build foundational literacy skills.
- Work closely with families and external services (e.g., NDIS) to ensure coordinated support.
- Provide professional learning and secondary consultations to staff on communication challenges and inclusive practices, aligned with the HOPE (Healing Oriented Program of Education) model.
- Maintain accurate case notes, reports, and NCCD documentation.
- Actively contribute to school life, including duties, excursions, meetings, and continuous improvement activities.
- Uphold Child Safe Standards, risk management, and all organisational policies and procedures.
Key Selection Criteria: (abridged – full position description available on request).
- Tertiary qualification in Speech Pathology, CPSP, full AHPRA registration, and minimum 3 years' experience (preferably with adolescents in school settings).
- Skilled in holistic, evidence-based assessments, detailed report writing, and developing tailored strategies to overcome communication, literacy, and participation barriers.
- Strong understanding of adolescent development and its impact on language, social skills, and learning.
- Proven ability to engage young people therapeutically, working within a multidisciplinary team to achieve positive outcomes.
- Competent in data collection, analysis, and communication to drive evidence-based decisions and continuous improvement.
- Demonstrated capacity to lead evaluation, strategy, and stakeholder engagement, turning plans into measurable action.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed practice, OH&S, child safeguarding, and the HOPE model.
- Tech proficient, organised, collaborative, and committed to professional learning.
Mandatory: Police Checks, WWCC (Employee), professional registration (e.g., AHPRA, CPSP), Victorian Driver's Licence, and Australian work rights.
