
Outdoor Education Instructor

We are seeking a highly motivated and passionate Outdoor Education Instructor (0.6 FTE) to join our Glengarry team located in the Kangaroo Valley. This exciting role provides the opportunity to work in an environment that challenges students to grow holistically through outdoor education. You will lead and co-lead a variety of outdoor activities, including camps, hikes, climbing, canoeing, and expeditions. Additionally, you will provide pastoral care and contribute to the overall development of the Glengarry program, helping boys build leadership, resilience, and life skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver Outdoor Education Program: Lead and co-lead a range of outdoor activities, overnight trips, and extended expeditions. Ensure all activities align with educational objectives and students' developmental needs.
- Risk Management: Implement and monitor adherence to safety protocols and risk management procedures.
- Program Development: Collaborate with colleagues to continually improve the Glengarry Outdoor Education program, taking responsibility for at least one area of focus (e.g., mountain biking, canoeing, climbing).
- Student Mentorship: Participate in pastoral care, student mentoring, and supervise residential duties to ensure the wellbeing of students.
- Residential & Boarding Duties: Provide supervision in the dormitory, including morning and evening routines, and contribute to the residential care of students.
- Communication & Reporting: Maintain effective communication with students, parents, and colleagues. Participate in assessment, reporting, and parent-teacher meetings.
- Professional Development: Participate in training, reflection, and goal setting to enhance professional practice.
Key Competencies & Skills
- Leadership & Teaching: Ability to lead outdoor activities confidently and impart outdoor skills effectively to students.
- Problem-Solving: Demonstrates sound judgment and discretion when planning activities, selecting equipment, and managing students.
- Team Collaboration: Work collaboratively within a team, showing flexibility and innovation in a dynamic educational environment.
- Student-Centered Approach: Provide mentorship, supervision, and guidance to students, ensuring their personal growth and development.
- Communication Skills: Effective interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work respectfully with colleagues, students, and parents.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Certificate IV, Diploma, or Degree in Outdoor Recreation.
- Competency in at least four of the following outdoor activity areas:
- Bushwalking
- Navigation
- Mountain Biking
- Canoeing/Kayaking (flat water)
- Abseiling (natural and artificial surfaces)
- Climbing (natural and artificial surfaces)
- Sea Kayaking
- Caving
- Canyoning
- Surfing
- Wilderness First Aid Certificate (Remote First Aid).
- Light Rigid Licence.
- Royal Life Saving Bronze Medallion.
- At least 2 years of group leading experience in outdoor education.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings.
