The Coordinator Environmental Assessment sits within the Environment, Heritage and Resilience Department, in the Resilient Futures and Cultural Heritage work unit.
The teams in this work unit play a pivotal role in safeguarding community wellbeing and resilience through comprehensive environmental assessment, climate change mitigation and adaptation, natural hazard planning and engineering as well as cultural heritage management.
About the Role
This position is responsible for managing a multidisciplinary team of ecologists, environmental planners and arborists who assess development applications and provide environmental, bushfire and arboriculture advice in accordance with relevant federal and state legislation, standards and local planning instruments including the Gold Coast City Plan.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a multidisciplinary team of ecologists, environmental planners and arborists who are responsible for assessing development applications and providing environmental, bushfire and arboriculture advice in accordance with federal and state legislation, standards and local planning instruments including the Gold Coast City Plan.
- Act as a subject matter expert for Council in environmental assessment and prepare and present executive and technical information to various stakeholders as required, including internal stakeholders, City of Gold Coast residents, external consultants and members of the development industry.
- Provide strategic and tactical leadership to manage work priorities and undertake monitoring of workflows to deliver technically accurate outcomes in accordance with statutory timeframes and in accordance with the end-to-end development assessment process.
- Proven ability to negotiate and resolve strategic matters of importance through the development assessment and appeals processes using a strong understanding of federal and state government legislation relevant to environmental, bushfire and arboriculture planning and its application through development assessment in Queensland.
- Provide specialist input and leadership to support other environmental assessment and policy work being undertaken by Council.
- Drive high safety and wellbeing awareness and a culture of care and respect for the work environment.
- Ability to work in a collaborative and fast-paced work environment with a demand for quick decision making and the ability to facilitate development outcomes that preserve the City's natural assets.
About You
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline such as Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Applied Science, Environmental Management or equivalent and relevant experience.
- Demonstrated experience in bushfire ecology, consulting or assessment
- Demonstrated program and team leadership experience
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills including negotiation skills in complex matters
