The School of Medical and Health Sciences

The School of Medical and Health Sciences is home to teaching and research in Medical and Biomedical Sciences, Allied Health, and Exercise and Sports Sciences, as well as in Public, Occupational and Environmental Health. Centre for Precision Health

The Centre for Precision Health is a biomedical research centre driving cutting-edge multidisciplinary research to develop and apply precision health strategies that address key health priorities to optimise health and quality of life. Our researchers are focused on applying a precision health model across our three strategic research domains including Biomarker discovery, Disease mechanisms, and Health translation. Our combined knowledge and expertise across genomics, proteomics, neurophysiology and health translation, are applied to our key health priorities with the ultimate goal of improving patient outcomes and quality of life. This is all undertaken in a supportive research environment that facilitates the professional and scientific development of all of our members to ensure sustainable ongoing research excellence.

About the Opportunity

You will join a team of skilled researchers in the Collaborative Genomics and Translation Research Group (CGATG) within the Centre for Precision Health (CPH). As the Genomics Facility Coordinator, you will be required to:

  • Develop and maintain project processes, controls, checklists and methodologies required to achieve professional best practice in research and consultative project delivery.
  • Coordinate the organisation of the Genomics Facility including ensuring maintaining of research consumables and project specific requirements, through coordination of quotations and ordering.
  • Undertake specific project coordination responsibilities, including receipt and processing of samples, development and maintenance of study and project specific databases, undertaking of project specific analyses, data entry, data quality assurance checks, development of study progress reports and other required documentation.
  • Development and maintaining of all required documentation to first achieve and then maintain ISO 17025 certification, including SOPs, work instructions, and records of appropriate servicing, calibration and maintenance of equipment.
  • Undertake research/consultative project focused consultations with end-users independently or under the direction of the CTATG lead and other activities required as part of the CPH/CTATG/SMHS.
  • Provide effective communication and support to the research team in order to ensure that individual research or consultative projects are delivered effectively.
  • Oversee and provide guidance to research assistants and students involved in the laboratory spaces and facility to ensure that all individual research and consultative project milestones are met and standards adhered to.
  • Ensure all activities comply with ECU policies, processes and standards and ensure the safety and wellbeing of all involved in the project or entering the Genomics Facility and surrounding laboratory spaces

About you

You will be able to demonstrate:

Knowledge: knowledge of laboratory best practice, experience in genomic sample processing and analysis and experience in maintaining trackable sample and data repositories is essential. Furthermore, knowledge, development, maintenance, and updating of SOPs, as well as working with work instructions, are essential. Knowledge and working to ISO 17025 standards to maintain certification is desirable.

Experience: Experience in the use and maintenance of genomic sample processing (e.g. QIACube/QIASymphony) and analysis platforms (e.g. QuantStudio 12K/GeneTitan) is highly desirable. Relevant experiences in the coordination, delivery and reporting of research projects (preferably in genetics).

Presenting and Communicating Information: Ability to organise and present information, views and concepts in a concise, understandable and interesting format for a variety of audiences, from ECU's internal and external communities. Specifically, the ability to deliver concise reports for provision to external stakeholders who engage the services of the facility. Demonstrable, clear and prompt communication skills. Ability to develop and maintain certification level documentation.

Workplace efficiency and effectiveness: Knowledge of resources available across the system internally and externally. Working in a coordinated and integrated way recognising the key interdependencies for success. Ability to communicate and liaise with external company representatives, product specialists and service engineers.

Problem Solving and Decision Making: Ability to investigate, identify and analyse key issues and the associated best-practice solutions. Involves being creative and innovative when developing effective solutions and the ability to manage related risks. Also an understanding of when a decision needs to be escalated to others and working to try to identify and address potential problems before they arise.

Planning and Organising: Comprises setting objectives, planning, managing time, managing resources, monitoring progress, evaluating results and taking corrective action utilising appropriate planning tools. Planning and scheduling service requirements for equipment and maintaining all required systems/equipment in line with ISO 17025 certification requirements.
