**About the Opportunity**
ASC is entering a new and exciting chapter in its history, having been named the Australian Government’s Sovereign Submarine Partner to sustain and jointly build conventionally-armed nuclear-powered submarines. This role will primarily focus on our sustainment program and will be instrumental in establishing the Australian Licensed Support Activity (ALSA) workforce carrying out shoreside operations within the Controlled Industrial Facility (CIF), the radiological industrial workshop at HMAS Stirling. The role will be key in establishing the processes and systems required for successful sustainment of visiting US and UK submarines and eventually Australia’s own conventionally-armed nuclear-powered submarines. The Head of Radiological Control will be accountable for compliance with Australian legislation and regulations and will interface with external stakeholders. This role will also contribute to building ASC’s Social Licence and developing a nuclear mindset across the wider organisation.
**Responsibilities**
- Responsible to the Naval Base Commander, the Head of Radiological Control will be accountable for implementing the radiological controls, environmental monitoring and dosimetry programs.
- Responsible for the movement, transfer, storage and disposal of radioactive material and sources.
- Responsible for the facility and all work being conducted in the CIF. Including developing plans, procedures, allocation of personnel and financial resources and compliance with regulations.
- Accountable for ensuring reporting staff are suitable qualified and experienced to perform their duties.
- Accountable for a small team of department heads within the Radiological Control department
- Serves as a consultant to the Naval Base Commander for all aspects of the radiological control program.
- Accountable to an internal and external audit program.
- Accountable and responsible for the nuclear emergency response organisation within the emergency preparedness and response organisation. The Head of Radiological Control will be responsible for directing and managing the radiological response in the event of an incident.
- The Head of Radiological Control will be responsible for making significant broad decisions, which are consistent with the requirements of higher authority, that can affect the whole of program.
**About you**
- Tertiary qualification in a nuclear or radiological discipline; masters preferred.
- 20+ years experience in a senior position within a nuclear industry, particularly in the fields of defence or power.
- Extensive experience in managing a system safety program.
- Strong knowledge of navy (submarines) or defence is highly regarded.
- Demonstrated ability to identify and implement interventions and high quality solutions to complex problems
- Demonstrated ability to lead high performing teams in complex and high stakes environments
- Ability to set clear organisational standards and guardrails
- Ability to effectively communicate complex topics to the public in a clear and accessible manner
**Eligibility**
This role requires a current National Police Clearance, an Australian Defence Security Clearance and an ability to access protected US defence technology. Your eligibility for this role is dependent on you obtaining and maintaining such clearances and approvals.
