**Who we are**
The new National Energy Transformation Division is being established to support the Australian Government to drive the transition to a clean energy future. The Division will be instrumental in delivering the Australian Government’s commitment to reduce emissions by 43% from 2005 levels by 2030 and achieving net zero by 2050. The work of the Division will be key to transforming our energy systems as we facilitate the transition to a lower emissions economy.

The branch’s core workstreams include:

- Providing economic analysis, insights and foresights on current and future energy market dynamics and trends, within the context of broader domestic and international economic developments.
- Modelling Australian electricity, gas and transport markets with a suite of industry-standard and bespoke modelling tools.
- Publishing Australia’s official energy statistics.
- Providing data and analytics on market dynamics and key indicators for Australia’s energy transition.

We cover a wide range of topic areas and have particular expertise in electricity and gas supply, transmission, energy performance and transport energy.

The branch's work supports key government initiatives like the 82% renewable electricity target, Rewiring the Nation, the Energy Price Relief Plan, the National Energy Performance Strategy and the National Electric Vehicle Strategy.

**The Job**
The branch is currently expanding its economics, analytical and modelling capabilities to inform delivery of government priorities in respect of Energy and Climate Change. We are seeking Assistant Directors who are enthusiastic problem-solvers, to support the branch’s work during an exciting time in Australia’s energy transition.

Depending on the role, your duties may include:

- Using analytical toolkits to problem solve policy problems
- Providing quantitative and qualitative research across a broad variety of energy policy areas
- Using market optimisation models and analytical techniques to generate data and forecasts to support policy development
- Briefing Ministers and senior executives, both in writing and verbally
- Engaging and collaborating with key stakeholders to support their work
- Supervising and developing the skills of junior members of the team.

**What we are looking for**

**Knowledge and experience**
- A good understanding of current economic issues and experience providing economic advice
- Previous experience in modelling or data analysis.

Additionally, depending on the role, one or more of the following would be an advantage:

- Understanding of energy systems, energy markets, or other complex markets
- Knowledge of market optimisation software, particularly PLEXOS
- Knowledge of R, Python, MS Excel, Power BI or other data analysis tools
- Well-developed understanding of the use of data in government

**Skills and capabilities**
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong analytical skills to draw accurate conclusions
- Ability to lead and manage projects with a high level of complexity, and achieve results with high impact
- A strong ability to develop productive relationships, work collaboratively and negotiate outcomes with colleagues and stakeholders
- Ability to think strategically about the information needs of stakeholders

**Mandatory qualifications**
Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline, such as economics, engineering, maths, statistics, data/computer science or the physical sciences

**Citizenship**
**- **To be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water you must be an Australian citizen.

**Security Clearance**
- This position requires a Baseline Vetting security clearance. You will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
