Russell, Australia Australian Government Department of Defence Full time

$78,143 - $83,700 (plus Super)
- Russell - ACT

**The Role**
Do you want to have input in how Australia might afford to equip and enable its Defence Force?

Here is a scenario: Defence’s Investment Committee is considering a proposal to buy an experimental system that could be a game-changer, but will be incredibly expensive and high risk. The committee turns to IPMB’s representative and asks whether the proposal is affordable and the potential risks to the integrity of Defence’s $270 billion integrated investment program. If the system works, the ADF could be better equipped and enabled to shape, deter and respond to threats; if it does not, it could create delays to other capability projects.

As a member of Investment Portfolio Management Branch (IPMB), the committee members trust that you have analysed a range of options, conducted extensive consultation across the Department and understand the implication for planning, governance, accountabilities, performance reporting; and how the proposal supports the alignment of strategy, capability and resources. Your advice could affect the ADF’s contribution to national security.

Within IPMB, situations like this are common. To succeed in this environment, you must demonstrate integrity, curiosity, resilience, a willingness to learn, the ability to work effectively in a small team and personal drive to deliver better outcomes for Defence and Government. IPMB welcomes new starters who have demonstrated high-level stakeholder engagement (including cross-agency), strong analytical and critical thinking skills, high-level written and oral communication, sound professional judgement and a desire to learn about the Defence capability system.

IPMB supports the highest-level decision makers in Defence and Government to deliver the outcomes required by the 2020 Defence Strategic Update and the 2020 Force Structure Plan. We directly provide decision support to the Vice Chief of the Defence Force in his role as Chair of the Investment Committee by providing independent analysis and advice to deliver a more capable ADF. We are an influential voice with the ability to shape and assure outcomes on all integrated investment program proposals to improve the way that Defence delivers capability for Government on an ongoing basis.

Through experience and feedback, you will develop the analytical, consultative and communications skills necessary to provide trusted advice on cutting-edge capabilities and the policy and processes to acquire and sustain them.
