About the Business Unit
The Aboriginal Justice Group of the Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS) is committed to driving systemic change in the justice system, to connect, support and deliver better outcomes for the Aboriginal community. The group works in partnership with Traditional Owners and the Victorian Aboriginal community to embed the principles of self-determination in the justice sector.
The AJPRU drives structural and systemic transformation and coordinates efforts across the department to improve justice outcomes for Aboriginal Victorians through policy development, legislative reform, and genuine commitment to self-determination. The AJPRU has primary responsibility for leading the Aboriginal Justice Group's law and policy reform agenda.
Reporting to the Director, AJPRU, you will be responsible for developing reform policy and/or legislation proposals and providing policy advice in relation to the Aboriginal Justice reform agenda. Work is driven by close engagement with the Aboriginal Justice Caucus and Forum, ensuring community voice is at the heart of AJPRU's work.
About the Role
Lead a small team of policy officers developing policy reform and legislative proposals to improve justice outcomes for Aboriginal Victorians. The Manager will work across a range of projects in the Aboriginal Justice Policy Reform Unit, including initiatives to reduce the overrepresentation of Aboriginal Victorians in the justice system. This may include developing expert advice regarding legislative proposals and their impact on Aboriginal communities, supporting other DJCS units to engage with Aboriginal justice partners and supporting engagement in related inter-jurisdictional forums.
**Some of your duties will include**:
- Have a demonstrated understanding of the Victorian Government's commitment to Aboriginal self-determination and be able to identify, develop and deliver reforms that align with the overarching Aboriginal self-determination agenda.
- Lead, in collaboration with senior management, the development and management of aspects of the ongoing evolution of Victoria's policy on Aboriginal justice matters and the Attorney-General's Aboriginal justice reform program.

About you
**To be successful in this role, you will have**:
- Excellent knowledge of public policy development and implementation and knowledge of Cabinet processes and government decision-making processes.
- Excellent knowledge of Aboriginal culture and society and understanding of historical and contemporary experiences of Aboriginal Victorians.
- Strong knowledge of, and demonstrated experience, working with Aboriginal communities and advisory groups, including sophisticated and culturally aware stakeholder engagement.
- Demonstrated experience in advocacy and delivering policy and legislative reform through community consultation and targeted engagement.
**Qualifications**:
- A relevant tertiary qualification in law, public policy, Aboriginal affairs or similar is desired.
