**About us**
The Department of Justice and Community Safety is responsible for the statutory supervision of young people in the criminal justice system. The Department's Youth Justice Service provides programs and resources to assist young people to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes to manage their lives effectively without further offending. Through supervision, offending related programs and linkages to appropriate support services, the Youth Justice Service promotes opportunities for rehabilitation and contributes to the reduction of crime in the community.
The Youth Justice program is primarily responsible for supervision and case management of young people between 10—21 years of age who have committed offences and been sentenced to community based statutory orders and/or on release from custody on parole.
**What does the Youth Justice Bail After-hours Service do?**
The Youth Justice Bail After-hours Service provides bail assessments and court advice to support the Children's Court and Bail Justices to undertake informed decision-making, and to ensure that young people are dealt with in a manner that is consistent with the key principles of diversion and minimum intervention that underpins the _Children, Youth and Families Act 2005_.
It may also involve appropriate further referrals to support services, and handover to the relevant regional teams. The team will provide essential support to young people, families, professionals, Bail Justices and the Children's Court.
**What does the Youth Justice Bail After-hours Service (YJ BAS) Worker do?**
As a YJ BAS Worker you will conduct bail assessments and provide advice to Bail Justices and the Weekend Online Remand Court (WORC) on weeknights, weekends and public holidays, working on a rotating roster. You will work both remotely and in-person to support the effective functioning of the state-wide Youth Justice Bail After-hours Service, including the WORC and the young people who appear before it.
The Youth Justice Bail After-hours Service will operate Monday to Friday from approximately 4pm to 3am, and on weekends and public holidays, with staff working on a rotating roster. You will work both in-person at the Parkville Youth Justice Precinct and remotely from home, with flexibility in these arrangements depending on your location. a The role will also include regular day shifts, where the worker will contribute to the effective functioning and service delivery of the YJ regional community workforce, overseen by the relevant Regional General Manager. You will be required to work after hours, weekends and public holidays, which will be remunerated in accordance with the applicable provision of the VPS Determination.
**What skills should a Youth Justice Bail After-hours Service YJ BAS Worker have?**
- advanced understanding of the Youth Justice system including the principles and philosophy underpinning relevant legislation and the Victorian Youth Justice program
- demonstrated knowledge and practice at an advanced level in the area of statutory Youth Justice or related fields
- understanding of the principles of case management and case work and a range of assessment and interventions relevant to the age, gender, developmental stage and offending related needs of the young person
- a Bachelor of Social Work or Diploma in Community Services Work (other tertiary qualifications at Diploma or above will be considered
