**About the School of BioSciences**
The School of BioSciences was formed in 2015 through the amalgamation of the School of Botany and the Departments of Genetics and Zoology, thus bringing together a critical mass of 160 Academic staff and 240 Research Higher Degree students undertaking world class teaching and research in the biological sciences. Academics within the School are aligned to four research clusters: Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Science; Genetics, Genomics and Development; Plant Science and Computational Biology. Through cross-disciplinary collaborations within the School and with external partners, the School is a major recipient of grant and contract funding.
The School is a major contributor to the Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Biomedical Science and the Environmental Science programs, its teaching program reflecting the research interests within the School.
**About the Role**
The Lab Manager will be involved in research activities in the lab as needed in collaboration with Professor Wedell and students and postdocs. Research activities include helping to maintain insect populations, including experimental evolution fly populations. This involves food preparation, cleaning of plastic and glassware and undertaking extensive sample preparation required for subsequent molecular analyses, and basic measurements of flies in growth chamber conditions.
As part of the Wedell Lab, the appointee to this position will play a pivotal role in supporting the insect work and in leading and managing the overall safety and operations of the lab. The appointee will be responsible for all aspects of the laboratory operation, including instrumentation and equipment, insect maintenance, all administration of researchers, students and visitors, and supplies to ensure the smooth operation of the laboratory.
Responsibilities include:
- Ensure the efficient and effective operation of the Wedell laboratory in the School of BioSciences
- Write and manage field permits for the collection of insects from the field in Australian states as needed
- Independently undertake experimental research and analyse data
- Manage the financial operations of the Wedell laboratory with the guidance of the Lead Academic
**About You**
You will an interest and significant experience in biological data analysis and presentation, including experience with the R programming language and well-developed statistical skills. You will possess outstanding communication skills and the ability to disseminate information to a broad range of audiences such as researchers, community groups and government departments.
You will also have:
- A degree in a relevant discipline and/or equivalent mix of education and relevant significant experience in the management of insect evolutionary studies
- Significant experience with Drosophila evolutionary ecology research
- Molecular expertise
- Experience managing small teams of staff and students
