**About the Role**
The Laboratory Officer (Teaching) will be responsible for managing the laboratories used for teaching within the School of Agriculture & Food and the Melbourne Veterinary School in the Faculty of Science at the University of Melbourne.

The role is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the teaching laboratories across a range of veterinary and agricultural disciplines. Reporting to and working under the direction of the relevant manager, this position will work collaboratively with other Laboratory Officers and Laboratory Managers to provide technical support to teaching and learning activities, and ensure that the Faculty’s laboratories, whether used for teaching or research, are safe, compliant and in full operational order. This role does not carry out research activities.

The Laboratory Officer is the principal source of advice to the teaching academic staff on resources required to support the laboratory teaching programs across a range of agricultural and veterinary disciplines. The role is also required to contribute to continual development of systems for improved service delivery.

Responsibilities include:

- Providing technical support for teaching activities by coordinating and maintaining the planning, preparation, setup and pack down for classes, in particular practical classes in laboratories
- Contributing to the development of practical classes and provide advice on practical student activities in the laboratory facilities
- Organising and collecting specimens, samples and materials for practical classes, when required
- Maintaining laboratory facilities, equipment and materials in optimal operational condition, consistent with all relevant compliance frameworks and accreditation requirements.

**About You**
You will have excellent written communication skills with proven ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail, resulting in consistent and timely preparation of reports, correspondence and tasks. You will have the ability to identify and develop systems for service improvement and experience in delivering high-quality customer service and a high level of flexibility, enthusiasm and initiative, along with the ability and willingness to learn new skills and undertake new tasks as required. You will work autonomously and effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team on a flexible roster to achieve goals and objectives and work under general direction within a busy and changing environment.

You will also have:

- A relevant degree or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training
- A sound understanding of the regulatory requirements of working in a laboratory including those related to EHS, chemical, OGTR and Biosecurity regulations
- Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills with proven ability to liaise professionally and effectively with a diverse range of people at all levels
- To ensure the University continues to provide a safe environment for everyone, this position requires the incumbent to hold a current and valid Working with Children Check._
