**About the role**
The Midwifery Unit Manager (MUM) for the Birthing in Our Community (BiOC) Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) is a Registered Midwife responsible for the overall leadership and management of the BiOC MGP service. This role involves providing both clinical and operational leadership while ensuring the delivery of culturally safe, comprehensive, and holistic maternal and infant health services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.
The MUM must possess a strong understanding of the unique challenges faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and demonstrate the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with these communities.
In addition to leading the midwifery team, the MUM ensures the provision of high-quality, patient-centred care that aligns with community needs, priorities, and government guidelines. The MUM will work closely with the BiOC Program Manager to drive continuous improvement, enhance service effectiveness, and promote the long-term success and sustainability of the program. Collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders is key to achieving these goals.
**Salary range: $66.86 - $72.59 per hour** plus 11.5% superannuation and**access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900** +**access to many staff benefits
**What you’ll be doing**
Clinical Outcomes
- Ensure the delivery of culturally safe, high-quality care that is community-driven and family-centred, with a strong emphasis on continuity from antenatal through to postnatal care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.
- Demonstrate cultural capability by understanding the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, their world views, and shared connections to land and culture, incorporating this knowledge into care practices.
- Oversee case management and care coordination for complex families within the CARES space (Collaboration Around Referrals and Empowering Strengths), ensuring that multi-disciplinary support is available to optimise clients' health journeys from antenatal to postnatal care.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of care in achieving predicted outcomes, reviewing care plans based on evaluated data, and collaborating with relevant staff to ensure culturally appropriate discharge planning processes are initiated.
- Collaborate with a wide range of healthcare professionals and community services to ensure culturally appropriate, integrated care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, respecting cultural protocols and sensitivities.
- Act as a patient advocate, ensuring informed consent is gained prior to treatment, investigation, or management, and assist sensitively in navigating potential barriers to understanding, particularly when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients.
- Establish priorities for addressing identified health needs in consultation with the patient or group of patients, ensuring the approach respects the cultural values and beliefs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.
- Implement innovative models of care that promote family connection, cultural growth, and health empowerment, ensuring that the care approach is responsive to the unique needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities.
- Participate in the development and implementation of models of care that support cultural continuity, ensuring practices align with the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.
- Proactively identify and intervene in situations where cultural sensitivities may contribute to an unsafe environment for patients, relatives, or staff, and escalate these concerns appropriately.
Service and Operational Outcomes
- Participate in and collaborate on the design and execution of quality improvement initiatives, ensuring cultural perspectives and community feedback are integral to the development of service enhancements.
- Contribute to the strategic direction of the service by identifying emerging trends, challenges, and opportunities to improve service delivery, particularly in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
- Support the strategic direction of BiOC by identifying and advising on future issues and recommend potential new directions for the service that prioritize cultural safety and family-centred care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.
- Develop and prepare regular reports that communicate the effectiveness of the service to stakeholders, including funding bodies and community partners, ensuring that cultural outcomes are measured and communicated appropriately.
- Measure and report on the effectiveness of the service against agreed KPIs, with particular attention to cultural safety and family-centered outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.
