About the Role
The Department of Justice and Community Safety (the department) is seeking two assistant managers to oversee a team of senior safety advisors. You will all work together to uphold the department's excellent health and safety standards.
The Assistant Manager, Safety sits within Safety, Wellbeing and Compliance, a branch of the People and Workplace Services in the Department of Justice and Regulation (the department). The Safety, Wellbeing and Compliance branch provides process, systems and services to support the department to meet its responsibilities under Health and Safety Laws (Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004, Dangerous Goods Act 1985 and Workplace Injury Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2013).
In this role, you will provide leadership in monitoring existing safety management systems and provide guidance and advice to develop and deliver operational safety excellence in partnership with Managers, Health and Safety Representatives and staff to maximise the effectiveness of the Safety Management System.
The Assistant Manager, Safety will lead their team and work in partnership with a range of safety and wellbeing stakeholders together with Business Unit Managers. The strategic focus of the team is upon driving improved safety outcomes, through a capability uplift and skill transfer to business unit staff to support the delivery of proactive preventative health and safety strategies, to create a safety-first department.
The role will work in metropolitan and country locations as required across a range of front-line business functions which may include Corrections Victoria, custodial and Community Corrections, Youth Justice custodial and Community Services, Sheriff's Operations, Consumer Affairs Compliance, Justice Services Programs across the state and a range of corporate business units in implementing safety initiatives, strategies, and programs. The role will be based in the Melbourne CBD with the expectation of travel to metropolitan and country locations to provide leadership and support to adviser team and operational staff. This is a front-line role requiring operational support although there will be some opportunities to complete some functions working from home.
About You
- Demonstrated success in leading and managing a high performing multidisciplinary team and a working knowledge of human resources and people management
- Demonstrated senior relationship management skills and working across multiple stakeholder groups
- Relevant significant industry experience in occupational health and safety management systems
- Demonstrated experience in the identification OHS risks and developing, implementing, and evaluating preventative strategies
- Demonstrated experience in consulting with managers and staff to provide key outcomes in health and safety, change management and related workplace improvement initiatives
- Demonstrated experience in contributing to cultural change in health, safety, and wellbeing
- A strong ability to hold self and team accountable to public sector values and agreed performance standards, and support the achievement of outcomes by anticipating and resolving issues. Also able to establish and implement actions to increase level of people engagement, and create opportunities for recognising performance
- A strong ability to identify issues in common for one or more clients or stakeholders and use them to build mutually beneficial partnerships, as well as identifying and responding to a stakeholder's underlying needs. Also uses an understanding of the stakeholder's organisational context to ensure outcomes are achieved
- Relevant tertiary qualifications and extensive experience is desirable
- A full and current driver's license is required due to the need to work across different locations.
