The Safety, Wellbeing and Compliance Advisor sits within Safety, Wellbeing and Compliance, a branch of People, Safety and Culture in the Department of Justice and Community Safety (the department). The Safety, Wellbeing and Compliance unit provides process, systems and services to support the department to meet its responsibilities under Health and Safety Laws (Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004, Dangerous Goods Act 1985 and Workplace Injury Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2013) and the department's Health, Safety and Wellbeing Strategy 2021-25.
About the Role
The Safety Quality Assurance Adviser provides guidance, advice and support on safety, wellbeing and compliance issues across the department to ensure compliance with Health and Safety legislation, the department's Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) and internal SWC business requirements that support the departments Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) Strategy. A key part of the Safety, wellbeing and Compliance Advisers role is the triage of sensitive incidents recorded in the departments online OHS incident report system.
The Safety, Wellbeing and Compliance Advisor mentor's and supports stakeholders in understanding their safety responsibilities under health and safety legislation, the departments OHSMS and HSW Strategy. The role also develops and implements tools to assist with compliance and reporting requirement. The role is based in Melbourne CBD.Some of your duties may include:
- Provide support, advice, guidance and expertise to staff, managers and key stakeholders by providing information and assistance in relation to health and safety matters, including use of the OHSMS and associated SWC systems (i.e., JIMS)
- Triage sensitive incidents recorded in the department's incident management system and maintain the sensitive incident register
- Liaise with department executives and impacted staff when triaging sensitive incidents to ensure timely allocation and supports.
About You
- Have excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to build relationships at all levels both in writing and in person
- Have a proactive can-do attitude, be flexible and comfortable working in a fluid environment
- Have solid organisational skills and ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
- Be experienced in utilising HPE Content Manager (TRIM), MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Relevant significant industry experience in occupational health and safety management systems
- Demonstrated experience in consulting with managers and staff to provide key outcomes in health and safety, change management and related workplace improvement initiatives
- Demonstrated experience in consulting with managers and staff risk processes leading to workplace improvement initiatives including industry experience in risk management using processes, such as ISO 31000:2009, Risk Management or the former standard AS/NZS 4360: 2004.
Qualifications/Requirements
- Relevant tertiary qualification in occupational health and safety is highly desirable, but not essential if extensive experience is demonstrated.
