TERN (Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network) is Australia’s field-based ecological observatory; collecting, recording and sharing data and samples using highly instrumented monitoring sites, surveys and remote-sensing techniques such as drones and satellites. TERN’s model-ready data enables researchers, land managers and policy-makers to detect and interpret changes in ecosystems from continental scale to field sites at more than 1000 representative locations. Since 2012, TERN’s Ecosystem Surveillance group, based at The University of Adelaide, has collected soil and vegetation data and samples according to standardised, widely endorsed and consistent protocols. The TERN Australia Soil and Herbarium Collection houses over 150,000 vegetation and soil samples, which are freely available for researchers to access on request along with the associated contextual data. TERN’s world-class surveillance monitoring infrastructure supports long-term ecological and biodiversity inventory, environmental monitoring and prediction, reporting and assessment, underpinning decisions about our greatest environmental challenges. TERN is enabled by the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS).
The TERN Team are seeking a dynamic and motivated Training and Engagement Officer to work with a team of 2-3 Scientific Field Officers to deliver on-ground training programs for a joint project with the Australian Government Ecological Monitoring System Australia (EMSA).
EMSA is a set of nationally standardised survey modules and data systems aimed at improving the collection, management and storage of ecological field data by the natural resource management (NRM) community.
The Training and Engagement Office will enjoy:
- Coordinating the EMSA training program, with 4-5 on-ground 3-5 day field training courses conducted annually across Australia
- Delivering the field training components with the support of the team.
- Delivering online training webinars, workshops, and instructional short videos.
Regular interstate and remote travel, indicatively six - eight times per year including camping is required. When not in the field, the Training and Engagement Officer will be based with TERN Ecosystem Surveillance at the Waite campus, Urrbrae.
**To be successful you will need**:
- Experience carrying out ecological surveys, including vegetation sampling methodologies, and specimen preparation techniques, field classification and species identification, requiring adherence to appropriate management of health, safety and environmental challenges.
- Experience in electronic ecological field data collection, curation and data management.
- Experience in planning, coordinating, managing and delivering training, engagement or outreach activities to a broad level of student’s skills, experience and competencies.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to present to external audiences, demonstrate field method techniques to groups (including up to 30-40 people) in-person, and present online workshops.
- The ability to work collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders to influence and effect change.
- Demonstrated ability to promote the organisational values of integrity, respect, collegiality, excellence and discovery, and a commitment to positively comply with the associated behaviour expectations.
**Qualifications / Licences**
- Completion of a degree in a relevant field (science, agricultural science, ecology, environmental studies etc.) with subsequent relevant experience; or
- An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.

- Certificate 4 in Training and Assessment (desirable).
