**About the role**

Reporting to the Chief HSE & Sustainability Officer the Head of Health and Safety is responsible for leading the Pacific National (PN) health and safety team to deliver the Health and Safety strategic plan and ensure safe operations are achieved in a sustainable manner.

This role is also responsible for delivering cultural change aligned with our Pacific National Approach (PNA) including the strategic priority of Safety - Above all else, such that everyone can go Home Safely Every day’.

Our philosophy of we “care more” underpins our whole approach to safety, health and wellbeing and environment and sustainability, and will support our overall Environment and Social Governance (ESG) objectives at PN.

Key accountabilities include:

- Deliver a best-in-class approach to safety culture, processes, and behaviours, and drive accountability within and across the business to continuously improve Pacific National (PN’s) Health & Safety performance.
- Ensure that the HSE management system and risk and governance frameworks enable People Leaders, employees and contractors to carry out their roles safely and effectively.
- Development and execution of the Health & Safety strategic plan, strategic initiatives, benchmarking performance and leading HS workforce planning and management.
- Provide expertise to all business units to develop and align policies, procedures and standards.
- Maintain a close working relationship with the ESG team to ensure strategy, projects and activities are aligned.
- Monitor and implement wellbeing initiatives across Pacific National that are aligned to an overall wellbeing strategy.
- Provide regular updates and submissions to key internal committees, executives and the board on progress against the strategic plan and organisational safety performance.
- Leading, coaching and mentoring the Health and Safety team and Business Leaders, inspiring a vision and driving a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and world class performance.
- Maintain compliance with regulatory policy, procedures and standards, building trust and maintaining a transparent relationship with regulatory bodies, regulatory agencies and relevant industry groups.

**About you**

This is a highly influential role within Pacific National. You will be collaborative, communicative, and comfortable turning strategy into action with a background leading Health and Safety teams ideally within rail, transport and logistics organisation, or other heavily regulated industries. You will bring an understanding of the challenges of maintaining Health and Safety leading practice within 24/7 operations, and a passion for coaching and working with people at all levels of an organisation. You will have demonstrated experience working at Board Level whilst being comfortable having “boots on the ground” to build an in-depth understanding of the business.

In addition:

- Tertiary qualification in health and safety, business, engineering or a related discipline.
- Knowledge of safety and environment with at least 10 years’ experience in large complex organisations.
- Demonstrable commitment to safety and track record of driving improved safety performance and culture in a highly regulated industrial environment.
- Constructive leadership style to build and maintain a high performing and collaborative team working towards achieving the HSE strategic plan.
- Strategic, commercial and conceptual thinking with analytical and process-driven experience.
- Well-developed capability to operate at the Executive and board level, engaging and influencing with senior leaders.
