The Department of Home Affairs is responsible for centrally coordinated strategy and policy leadership in relation to domestic national security arrangements, law enforcement, emergency management, counter-terrorism, social cohesion, the protection of our sovereignty, the integrity of our border and the resilience of our national infrastructure.
The Australian Border Force, an operationally independent body within the Department of Home Affairs, is Australia's frontline border law enforcement agency and Australia's customs service. The Australian Border Force's mission is to protect Australia's border and facilitate the legitimate movement of people and goods across it.
**Overview of the Branch and Section**:
The Detention Contracts Management Unit (DCMU) plays a critical role for the Australian Government in supporting Immigration Detention through strategic governance and contract management of commercial onshore service providers and management of Memorandum of Understanding agreements with state and territory emergency service agencies, health departments and correctional facilities.
The primary objective of the DCMU is to support the Australian Border Force in administering Australia’s held onshore immigration detention under the Migration Act 1958.
The DCMU’s role is to ensure the efficient, effective, economical and ethical expenditure of public money through the management and administration of service provider contracts and state and territory Memorandum of Understanding agreements, with a focus on maintaining the health and welfare of detainees and ensuring the safety and security of detainees and the Australian public.
**About the role**:
The APS 5 within DCMU is responsible for contributing to services support, service delivery and several other key aspects including; contract management and administration for the Commonwealth’s contracts and Memorandum of Understandings.
The APS 5 works under the direction of an Executive Level 1 or an APS6, and will provide a range of administrative, procedural and operational support services to the team, including record keeping and reporting using departmental systems.
This position works in a dynamic, complex and sensitive environment and will need to maintain close relationships with a range of internal and external providers.
The APS 5 will be required to work both collaboratively in a team and on their own in a self-directed manner.

**Specific duties/responsibilities**:
- Ability to respond clearly and comprehensively to urgent requests
- Ability to prioritise workloads and meet tight deadlines
- Effective communication skills including negotiation skills, and verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrated analytical, research and problem solving skills.
**Role requirements/qualifications**:
- A minimum of Certificate IV in Procurement and Contracting or equivalent on commencement or shortly thereafter.
