**The Opportunity**
We have an opportunity for a Research Vessel Officer - Mate to be part of our South Australia Research and Development (SARDI) Division within the Department of Primary Industries and Regions.
The primary role of the Ship’s Mate onboard the MRV Ngerin is to support successful research outcomes for SARDI by supporting the Ship’s Master in operational responsibility for the vessel, including managing the crew, contractors, and their activities. The Ship’s Mate is responsible for conducting routine servicing and maintenance of the vessel, in both the engine room and on deck, performing crane/winch duties, standing watch as required, regular maintenance and servicing of the engine room and plant deck, helping with deck tasks and also acting as the Ship’s Master when required. Also, and as capability and time allows, works with or independently of the vessel’s Master and / or Engineer to fabricate specific vessel and research equipment onboard the vessel and / or in the workshop at the North Arm Store.

- Successful applicant will be required to satisfactorily complete a National Police Check (NPC) prior to being made an offer of employment
- Australian residency or current works permit is required (responsibility of applicant to provide evidence of a current work permit).
**Requirements**:
- Experience in working in offshore waters and using vessel-based fishing equipment.
- Regularly participates in R&D cruises on the MRV Ngerin and possibly other vessels.
- A willingness to drive.
- A current Police Check.
- Regular out-of-hours work and some inter/intrastate travel may be required.
- Medically fit for the role (pass an appropriate medical).
- Personal Protective Equipment is worn when necessary and work, health and safety obligations and the agencies expectations are acknowledged.
- Advanced workshop technical skills desirable.
- The incumbent will operate under the Marine Vessel “Ngerin” Industrial Agreement. An allowance of 80% is payable in lieu of all penalties incurred whilst working overtime, shift, or weekend work.
- The area of operations are primarily South Australian coastal and adjacent marine waters. The incumbent will be required to undertake up to 150 working days at sea. At sea periods may at times be continuous for extended periods but no greater than 14 days.
- The incumbent will be required to undertake emergency management training and must be willing to participate in emergency preparedness, response and recovery activities required by government agencies.
