The Opportunity

We have an opportunity for a Senior Research Services Officer– Oceanography to be part of our South Australian Research and Development Institute Division within the Department of Primary Industries and Regions.

The primary purpose of the role is to coordinate and oversee the planning and delivery of field-based research operations and laboratory work required to deliver the scientific research outcomes of the Oceanography Subprogram.

The role involves substantial periods of time in the laboratory and field, supervising and undertaking fieldwork on SARDI vessels and commercial fishing vessels, implementing appropriate hazard management and WHS processes, and supporting a range of research projects.

Key duties include preparation, maintenance and operation of oceanographic equipment, water quality sampling, and deployment and recovery of oceanographic sensors on coastal moorings. A key component is participation in field surveys supporting the national Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) in South Australia, alongside other funded monitoring projects.

The role requires a Coxswain certification with demonstrated experience in small vessel operations relevant to coastal oceanographic monitoring. The role contributes to delivering the agency’s priorities including ‘sustain the resource’ and ‘Manage risk and recovery’ by informing the sustainable management of South Australia’s seafood and marine-based industries, effective management of marine environmental assets, and enhanced resilience of regional communities through science-led innovation and policy advice.

Requirements

- Current driver’s licence and demonstrated capability to tow trailers.
- Current Coxswain certification and capability to command vessels undertaking coastal oceanographic operations.
- Out of hours work and inter/intrastate travel will be required.
- Field trips on research and commercial vessels will be required.
- Willingness to undertake further training as required (e.g., dogging, forklift licence).
- Australian residency or valid work permit (responsibility of applicant).
- You acknowledge your work, health and safety obligations and our expectations when applying for a role.
- Must undertake emergency management training and participate in emergency preparedness, response and recovery as required.

Remuneration

OPS4 - $76,561 min - $80,256 max per annum, plus superannuation

Qualifications

Essential

- Coxswain certification.

Desirable

- Elements of Shipboard Safety certification.
- Relevant tertiary qualification or experience in Marine Science, Fisheries Science or Ecology.
