Apprentice Metal Fabricator

**Metal Trade Apprenticeship (Certificate III in Engineering)**
Australis Engineering manufactures customised, automated machinery such as conveyors, palletisers, packing equipment and processing systems from our locations in Sydney and Brisbane. We are currently looking to recruit new apprentices into a metal working trade apprenticeship (fulltime, permanent roles).
An apprenticeship in a metal trade is generally a 4 year training program (although it can sometimes be accelerated) and includes 4-days paid work per week at our workplace and 1-day of paid TAFE training per week. At the end of a successful metal trade apprenticeship, you graduate with a Certificate III (Engineering) and become a fully qualified trades person. Several Certificate III Engineering apprenticeship courses are available across several disciplines including Sheet Metal fabrication, Welding/ Boiler making and Fitting/ Machining and you will be required to successfully study and complete one of these courses.
**What does a Metal Trades person do?**
If you love the idea of making functional items out of raw materials, a fabrication apprenticeship is for you. Roll up your sleeves and start creating, shaping and joining steel, sheet metal and metal components by gaining the skills to interpret technical drawings and bring designs to life. Learn skills such as how to read an engineering drawing, perform welding or machining and how to use basic hand and power tools to craft durable objects that stand the test of time.
As you progress, you'll delve into the craft of turning raw materials into functional equipment such as conveyors and palletisers.
**What makes you ideal for the role?**
You’ll be well suited to a Metal Trades apprenticeship if you enjoy working with your hands and creating objects using tools and skilled techniques. If you're fascinated by how machines work, or if you find satisfaction in the idea of taking a blueprint (engineering drawing) and turning it into a physical reality, then you'll likely thrive in this field. A metal trades apprenticeship offers the opportunity to dive deep into the mechanics of metal structures and understand how they come together
Working at Australis Engineering means you will have opportunities to work for a large number of different customers and on a diverse range of customised equipment including robotics and automation. So if you’re a fan of variety when you’re at work, a metal trade apprenticeship is a great option.
- Have a strong mechanical aptitude - the ability to understand how equipment operates; this might be relevant work experience in construction, manufacturing or similar sectors, or via a personal hobby (examples could include repairing bikes, cars, small engines or similar),
- Be reliable and hard working and capable of working independently (but with supervision) and as part of a larger team,
- Have an eye for detail and take pride in their work,
- Be curious and willing to learn, ask questions and open to performance feedback,
- Be dedicated to completing both TAFE studies and their work place training and experience,
- In addition to workshop based activities, also be available for some occasional site work across Sydney, regional NSW and even interstate,
**Pay and conditions**
With two (2) apprenticeships on offer that open to everyone from school leavers to adult apprentices, the wage range is quite broad. School leavers are likely to be around Award rates but Adult apprentices would likely be above Award rates to reflect modern cost of living pressures. Australis will also pay superannuation at legislated rates (currently 11.5% of your wage) plus allowances if you need to travel for work purposes.
Apprentices must work a 5-day, 38 hour week, which includes 4-days at our workplace and 1 day at TAFE training - yes you are paid to learn Being fulltime roles, all leave is inclusive including Annual leave and Sick leave.
Apprentices are required to engage with an apprenticeship support provider and to enrol at TAFE for commencement in 2025. Australis will reimburse your TAFE fees following the successful completion of each semester of TAFE training and satisfactory TAFE attendance.
Once TAFE enrolment is confirmed, Australis will also help each Apprentice to purchase a basic tool kit which will become the Apprentice's property following the successful completion of Year 1 of TAFE study.
Pay: $12.00 - $25.00 per hour
Expected hours: No less than 38 per week
Work Location: Hybrid remote in Condell Park, NSW 2200
Application Deadline: 25/10/2024
