The Aboriginal Housing Support Connector will support Aboriginal clients in a culturally safe, trauma informed, and empowering way. Working with other support workers they will build respectful and professional relationships with Aboriginal people who are entering or already living within St Pat’s accommodation.
They will support clients to identify and address, factors in the client’s life that may place their tenancy/residency at risk, helping them to connect with relevant specialist services that will assist them.
Main Duties
Provide support and encouragement to Aboriginal people to strengthen their independent living outcomes
Provide clients with appropriate and accurate information and education that supports and empowers informed decision making relating to housing and independent living options
Actively facilitate Aboriginal people’s access to services that reduce homelessness
Identify and develop relationships with appropriate culturally safe housing and independent living skills
Attend and actively participate in team, organisation, homeless and housing sector/stakeholder meetings, contribute to the exchange of housing and independent living information, relevant to the role and within the program’s guidelines and outcomes
Work collaboratively with specialised support services that deliver accommodation, or tenancy support for people with identified complicated and diverse needs
Provide cultural guidance and support to housing services and colleagues to ensure services, practices, and environments are sensitive to the trauma histories of clients and their culture
Identify, create or source culturally appropriate educational resources for Aboriginal people, their families, and St Pat’s staff
Selection Criteria
Aboriginality - This position has been deemed an identified position under Section 50D of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (WA)
Relevant qualification, or significant experience through an accredited education provider or relevant experience
Understanding of Aboriginal homelessness and housing
Strong effective interpersonal and communication skills.
Relevant life skills and life experience that will enhance the wellbeing of service users.
Demonstrated links with local community and cultural awareness.
An understanding of the barriers and adversity Aboriginal people experience with accessing accommodation and housing.
**Qualifications**:
Essential
Relevant community service qualification or equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or training; or relevant qualifications and/or experience in Aboriginal housing or homelessness.
High-level interpersonal skills, including sound written and oral communication skills and the ability to work as a member of a team.
Demonstrated high-level skills in the establishment and management of a range of internal and external stakeholder relationships.
Ability to connect in a culturally safe way and understand the personal impact of trauma experiences and intergenerational trauma for Aboriginal people specifically relating to homelessness.
Level of self-awareness, self-care skills strategies, personal boundaries and reflective practice and motivation to develop and learn.
Intermediate computer and writing skills.
Desirable
Demonstrated experience in identifying gaps relating to tenancy support, independent living skills and coordinating and connecting clients to support services.
Relevant experience in delivery of connection and service to people with complex or multiple issues
Experience working with Aboriginal people in the homelessness and housing sectors and social and emotional wellbeing.
