Identified position
This has been identified as a position to be filled by an Aboriginal person or a Torres Strait Islander person. Key reasons for this are that the main purpose of the role is to engage with detainees and their families; and it is acknowledged that there is an over representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in detention. It is an occupational requirement that this position be filled by an Aboriginal person or a Torres Strait Islander person as permitted and arguable under Sections 25, 104, and 105 of the Queensland Anti-Discrimination Act 1991.
The role
The Principal Advisor, Engagement supports the work of the Inspector of Detention Services (IDS) to inspect places of detention throughout Queensland including prisons, youth detention centres and watch-houses.
This is a new role and you will be working as part of the IDS team.
You will be helping to ensure inspections have regard to the cultural background and vulnerability of detainees. Your work will include visiting places of detention and having face-to-face interactions with adult and child detainees from diverse cultural backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. You will also be helping the Inspector to consult and engage stakeholders who can contribute to improvement of detention services. For example, former detainees, family and friends of detainees, and community organisations.
You will be required to travel to places of detention, including remote and regional locations, with consecutive days away from the metropolitan area. Travel and work may be required outside normal working hours, including weekends and at night.
Refer to the attached role descriptions for the list of responsibilities and the skills and capabilities required.
The Office is committed to building an inclusive and diverse workforce that reflects the community we serve.
We acknowledge our role in protecting and promoting human rights. Recruitment decisions are made in a way that protects these rights.
Please ensure you read the 'Information about IDS work' and the 'Guidelines for Applicants' documents. Follow the instructions listed under the heading 'Interested in applying' on the role description.
