ASIS is Australia’s overseas secret intelligence collection agency. Its mission is to protect and promote

Australia’s vital interests through the provision of intelligence services as directed by the Government.

Its work can involve collecting intelligence relating to national security, international relations and

economic issues. It also contributes to Australia’s coordinated national efforts against terrorism,

proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and trans-national issues such as people smuggling.

ASIS is seeking to place enthusiastic and capable corporate specialists in a number of Management

positions across the Service including Compliance and Risk Management, Examination and Release,

Coordination and Communication. In addition to our current vacancies, successful applicants through

this process will be placed in a merit pool which may be utilised to fill future vacancies over the next 18

months. You will be asked to indicate your main area of interest/experience noting all suitable applicants

will also be considered for general vacancies across the organisation.

EL1 Compliance and Risk Management

EL1 Compliance Risk Management Officer, you will be responsible for managing and

overseeing complex and sensitive work under broad direction. You will exercise a considerable

degree of independence and perform a leadership role. You will have well-developed decision
- making skills and exercise judgement and discretion, to produce high level advice to

management and relevant governance committees. You will be able to quickly develop an

understanding of the Service’s strategic priorities, external accountability requirements and

operating environment to effectively shape and guide enterprise risk considerations.

EL1 Examination and Release Officer

EL1 Examination and Release Officer, you will be responsible the oversight for the varies lines

of work to provide advice on legalisation requirements pertaining to archives matter and AAT.

You will engage with external agencies on the public release of classified government

information. You will manage a team of examiners and ensure appropriate handing of sensitive

information while supporting ASIS’s contribution to government approved projects and

undertakings of national significance.

The role of a compliance / risk management officer includes:
Contributing to the on-going review and drafting of the enterprise risk framework and
associated accountability requirements;
Providing advice on compliance, risk management and operational policy matters to ASIS
headquarters and operational teams;
Development and delivery of compliance and risk training;
Developing and fostering key relationships, compliance and risk culture through engagement
with both internal and external stakeholders;

in contributing to and improving ASIS’s compliance and risk management framework;
Maintaining an awareness of better practice risk management methodologies and global
standards and an ability to translate these to the ASIS environment;
Maintaining an awareness of relevant legislative change and associated requirements.

Maintaining discretion and strong security awareness in relation to highly sensitive material
relating to enterprise risk management.

Contributing to the activities of the section through self-motivation and willingness to assist as

necessary.

Education / Qualifications / Experience

The following education, qualifications and/or experience will be highly regarded:
Effective organisation skills and the ability to make sound judgements while progressing
multiple tasks.

Effective analytical skills and a logical approach to problem solving.

Demonstrated maturity and ability to manage sensitive matters discreetly.

Demonstrated experience in developing and maintaining successful client / customer
relationships.

Demonstrated experience managing and developing staff.

Risk Management qualification or background desirable.

Experience providing compliance, regulatory or oversight advice; particularly in relation to
intelligence or law-enforcement
