**The Role**
As the First Nations Culture Advisor for Joint Capabilities Group (JCG), you are an integral member of our team and will be responsible for providing culturally safe, appropriate, and timely advice and support to our people on First Nations matters.
You will be empowered to establish and implement a culturally safe and appropriate First Nations plan for JCG to deliver upon its cultural intent through meaningful and timely actions whilst maintaining strategic alignment to Defence strategy. In this position you will establish positive and influential connections, understand and navigate challenges as they arise and harness opportunities to support decision making.
**About our Team**
Headquarters Joint Capabilities Group (HQJCG) is a strategic and enabling corporate support service area available to all Joint Capabilities Group staff. No two days are ever the same and we work to deliver a range of high level support functions for our people in areas of Ministerial and Parliamentary services, Communications and Media, Legal, Business and Governance, Administration and Human Resource Management.
As a leader representing First Nations Culture, you will collaborate Defence wide to influence First Nations approaches and outcomes. This is a newly created position within the Workforce and Culture Directorate. Our Directorate is broad and oversees a range of Human Resource Management, Learning and Development and Organisational Culture functions.

Your responsibilities include:
- Establishing and building collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders to inform and support the delivery of Defence’s First Nations Approach
- Providing a First Nations perspective and insights into the development and implementation of JCG projects and plans
- Providing timely, culturally appropriate advice to JCG personnel as required
- Advising the JCG Culture, Diversity and Inclusion Working Group (CDIWG) on culturally safe and appropriate initiatives to ensure the delivery of meaningful outcomes
- Building the capacity of JCG to implement culturally sensitive, safe and responsive practice through advice and education provision as/when required
- End to end design and delivery of projects aligned to Defence’s and the Government’s commitment to Reconciliation.
As a First Nations Advisor, you will have the following skills and experience:
- Knowledge of issues impacting First Nations Peoples and communities
- Knowledge and or lived experience around the social determinates of health impacting on First Nations peoples
- Ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with First Nations peoples
- Strong communication skills both spoken and written, with the ability to adapt communication styles depending on the setting
- Previous experience in a similar role
- Existing relationships with First Nations peak bodies, advocacy organisations, service providers or other organisations
