**_ Palliative Care - Staff Specialist_**

The Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) is seeking to employ an experienced consultant to provide expert services in Palliative Medicine all within a vibrant, beachside community that offers an abundance of character and charm._**

This permanent position is an opportunity for a dynamic Palliative Care Physician to provide expert medical assessment and management of patients in the Palliative Care Service within the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District, based in the Illawarra area.

The Staff Specialist will be part of a team responsible for the provision of specialist palliative care services to community, emergency patients, consults service and inpatients. The successful applicant will proactively support the development of palliative care and end of life care services, facilitate a culture of learning, and support research within the department.

**Key Responsibilities, within a team**:

- To provide medical care of palliative care patients in the community, directly and through supporting other members of the multidisciplinary team
- To provide a hospital consult service for in-patients at Wollongong, Shellharbour, Bulli and Coledale Hospitals
- To provide medical care of palliative care patients admitted in the specialist palliative care unit
- To participate in out-patient clinics and provide support to the community palliative care teams.
- To participate in the Palliative Care after hours on call roster across ISLHD (Illawarra and Shoalhaven).
- To provide supervision to Advanced Trainees. Trainees, JMOs and medical students
- Above roles may be shared amongst other staff specialist within the team on a rotational basis

Port Kembla Hospital (temporarily relocated to Bulli District Hospital with subsequent move into purpose built ward in Wollongong Hospital) provides a 15 bed specialist palliative care ward whilst the service also supports patients within other hospital via a busy consultative service. The community palliative care service office is located in Wollongong (Piccadilly) Community Health Centre. The ISLHD Palliative care service is registered as PCOC reporting site and committed to ongoing quality improvement and providing patient-centred care. ISLHD is closely affiliated with the University of Wollongong and TAFE, providing ample opportunities for research, academic and education opportunities.

**Selection Criteria**

1. Specialist registration or eligible for specialist registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

2. Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) or Fellowship of the Australasian Chapter of Palliative Medicine (FAChPM) or on significant progress towards fellowship.

3. Evidence of continuing medical education and self-monitoring/audit practices consistent with the scope of practice requirements of the position.

4. Proven capacity and/or experience in the provision of effective high quality services, demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position including evidence of participation in quality improvement activities relevant to the specialty.

5. Demonstrated commitment to teaching with experience in teaching both undergraduate and post graduate students and other staff of the hospital.
