**About the role**
Reporting into the General Manager - Finance and Tax, as the **Principal Tax Adviser**, you will ensure Australian Retirement Trust’s (ART’s) taxation affairs are effectively managed and aligned with the organisation’s strategy and risk appetite. You will provide strategic leadership, advice and direction in relation to tax to maximise long-run investment returns after tax, after-fees and after expenses. You will also be accountable for tax compliance, tax risk management and tax strategy.
Key aspects of the role include:
- Lead Tax Strategy and establish clear goals that align the Finance agenda with the organisation’s goals.
- Act as a strategic tax partner to the business including the provision of expert advice on emerging tax issues to the General Manager - Finance and Tax, CFO, Executive Committee and Board.
- Drive tax compliance including managing international tax compliance obligations associated with offshore structures and leading the design and structure of investment structuring vehicles.
- Provide tax advice for investments, working with the Investments team to create strategies that improve the fund's after-tax returns. This includes expertise in tax matters related to mergers, acquisitions, and business restructuring.
- Ensure the timely and effective delivery of information, reports and advice relating to both fund and corporate tax to the Board and Audit & Risk Committee.
- Ensure risk and control frameworks are current and effective for managing tax risks. Develop, communicate, and promote tax policies, governance, and procedures, including the Tax Risk Framework.
- Ensure the preparation and submission of accurate tax returns.
- Manage internal and external tax audits and maintain relationships with regulators.

**About you**
It goes without saying you'll be a great communicator with top notch interpersonal skills. We'll also expect you to pick up problems and come up with quick, creative ways to solve them. It's quite likely you tick some of the following boxes too:
- Tertiary qualifications in Law, Finance, Accounting (or similar).
- Professional qualifications from the Institute of Chartered Accountants (CA ANZ), Certified Practising Accounts Australia (CPA) or Legal Practising Certificate.
- Extensive senior experience in tax strategy, governance, advisory, and compliance within finance, insurance, or funds management industries.
- Extensive knowledge of the financial services environment, including legislation, regulation, taxation, trusts, and compliance frameworks.
- Outstanding written and negotiation skills and proven experience in financial and regulatory reports for use by the CEO, Board, Executive team and industry bodies / regulators as required.
- Detailed understanding of the regulatory environment and compliance obligations for superannuation trusts.
- Demonstrated extensive experience leading a large high performing team in a dynamic environment.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement taxation strategies in large complex organisations.
