**JOB DESCRIPTION**:
**Position Status**:Volunteer
**Position Reports to**: This position is ultimately accountable to the Centre Director/Principal Solicitor, however direct supervision is provided by the solicitor/tenant advocate working with the volunteer.
**Primary Responsibilities**:
The Practical Legal Training Volunteer provides general assistance to legal centre staff as defined in the position duties. **A commitment of 2-3 days per week is required.**
**Role and context of Position**
CTBMCLC provides access to justice through the provision of legal and tenancy services, including community legal education, particularly for people who are disadvantaged by their social and economic circumstances.
The position is based in Katoomba and outreach to other locations may be required as directed.
**Position Duties include**:
- Conducting intake and assisting solicitors/tenant advocates in responding to callers seeking legal/tenancy advice
- Providing information and appropriate referrals
- Responding to face to face requests from the public
- Assisting solicitors/tenant advocates with tasks
- Data entry and filing
- Assisting with administrative tasks
- Assisting with preparation for community legal education sessions and other projects as required
- To assist with preparation of advice to clients, including online legal research
- To assist with ongoing casework
- Other duties as negotiated.
**Qualifications**
The Practical Legal Training Volunteer must be enrolled in an accredited practical legal training program with Law Society NSW (or equivalent body in other Australian states and territories), have an interest in social justice issues and the law, and a desire to work with disadvantaged people.
A Practical Legal Training Volunteer must also have a level of literacy and comprehension which will enable them to read legal information and forms and explain the content to clients as well as assisting clients to complete forms.
**Organisation Expectations**
1. Governance and Accountability
All volunteers will:
a. Adhere to CTBMCLC Constitution, philosophy, policies and procedures including state and federal legislation, funding body service agreements, the National Association of Community Legal Centre’s Risk Management Guide and industry standards;
b. Document work in line with required standards;
c. Ensure the complete and accurate collection of client data and entry onto CLASS/CDS client databases;
d. Perform all reasonable duties requested by staff;
e. Attend internal supervision sessions.
2. Teamwork
All volunteers will:
a. Attend staff, team and casework meetings when required and contribute to decision making;
b. Contribute to CTBMCLC planning relevant to own work, including implementation of the Strategic Plan;
c. Contribute to a positive and cooperative work environment;
d. Follow through on commitments;
e. Contribute to housekeeping tasks;
f. Notice and discuss areas for process improvement;
g. Act to support volunteers, management and other staff members.
3. Development
All volunteers will participate in required training and ongoing professional education.
4. Workplace Health & Safety
All volunteers will understand the WH&S Policy, and how they can participate and support the implementation of the WH&S Policy.
