
Fire Safety Compliance Officer

Actively contribute to Council’s Annual Fire Safety Statement Program (for buildings)
to ensure that statements are received, assessed, processed and accepted in
accordance with legislative requirements.
- The position is focused on providing quality customer service and regulatory outcomes
that contribute to improved development and public safety standards in the Blue
Mountains Local Government Area.

**Key External Relationships**:Residents and other members of the community,
applicants for development, government
authorities, consultants, Council’s legal advisors.
**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage escalatations associated with the day to day functions of Council’s building
fire safety program including the Annual Fire Safety Statement database, data audits,
extensions of time, customer requests, etc.
- Participate in the monitoring / surveillance of fire safety standards for buildings in
consultation with internal and external stakeholders.
- In accordance with relevant legislation and Council policies / guidelines, investigate
and exercise regulatory functions including the issue of development control orders or
fines in relation to building fire safety issues.
- Represent Council in legal proceedings concerning fire safety protection issues,
including the preparation of legal evidence on behalf of Council, in liaison with Council
solicitors.
- Develop and maintain knowledge of current legislation, policy and procedures relating
to the functions of Council’s fire safety program.
- Work with staff to review, develop and implement processes relating to various aspects
of public safety and amenity within the built environment.
- Manage workflows associated with corporate databases, public registers, customer
requests, and the Council report process.
- Participate in the development of e-business opportunities; field technology; marketing
plans and other business related activities as applicable to the functional area.

**Workplace Health & Safety**
Ensure compliance with WHS obligations and responsibilities as outlined in Council’s
policies and procedures and under the relevant WHS legislation. These include but are
not limited to: identifying potentially unsafe situations or work practices and notifying your
Supervisor or Manager (or the Health, Safety Manager/Area Safety Representative);
never performing a task that you believe is dangerous or for which you do not have the
experience, or have not received appropriate instructions and training or where the correct
equipment to carry out the task safely is not available; always work in a safe manner and
in accordance with safety instructions, where applicable; use the work equipment supplied
for the job, in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions), and any personal
protective equipment, which the Council deems necessary and has provided; be safety
aware and report any actions to your line manager which will assist the Council to meet
its legal workplace health and safety obligations.
You have the right to cease or direct cessation of unsafe work. In addition you are required
at all times to comply with Councils Asbestos Management Plan and Policy.
**COMMUNICATION**
The incumbent will communicate with a wide range of people in a variety of internal and
external settings. The incumbent will receive, interpret, and act upon written and verbal
information, and provide a response in both written and verbal forms. The incumbent will
need to be able to lead discussion, carry out negotiations and make presentations in areas
of functional responsibility, manage confrontational situations and represent Council in
court matters. The role will require the incumbent to represent and clearly articulate
Council’s position in negotiations and discussions with external parties and organisations.
