BMCC Animal Care Facility is dedicated to the protection and welfare of animals. We
strive to provide a safe and caring environment for abandoned, neglected, lost and
surrendered animals, with the goal of finding them permanent, happy homes.

The Animal Shelter Attendant is responsible for the care and maintenance of the
animals and buildings within the Animal Control Facility.

RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to (Position Title): Animal Facility Coordinator

Report to (Position Number): TBA

Staff Responsibility:
- Key Internal Relationships: BMCC team leader, coordinators, rangers, team
members, administration

Key External Relationships: Customers, animal owners, vets, suppliers,
animal rescue services, volunteers, and other
animal shelters.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Animal Shelter Attendants are responsible for ensuring high standards of animal
wellbeing are maintained for all animals in the care of BMCC and for ensuring high
standards of customer service with regard to animal related matters.

Animal Care, including:

- observing animals for injury, illness or behavioural problems and
reporting to supervisors accordingly,
- documentation and reporting of observations,
- exercising the animals,
- feeding animals as per feeding plans,
- providing proscribed medications to a variety of animals as per
treatment plans,
- finding appropriate housing for animals,
- washing and grooming animals,
- adhering to animal handling standards and procedures
- Assist customers in viewing and selecting new pets.
- Ensuring animal, public and staff areas are clean.
- Responsible for the surrender & adoption process, ensuring all documentation is

completed accurately.
- Facilitating the reclaim of animals ensuring that all required documentation is

completed and fees are paid.
- Ensuring all animals in care are identified, microchipped and recorded.
- Administrative duties including, but not limited to: daily banking, answering
- Record and maintain accurate animal records.
- Assist qualified Veterinarians with care and handling of animals.
- Animal training, including adhering to rehabilitation plans.
- Transport animals to and from veterinary practices and or other authorised

facilities as required.

Workplace Health & Safety

Ensure compliance with WHS obligations and responsibilities as outlined in Councils
policies and procedures and under the relevant WHS legislation. These include but
are not limited to: identifying potentially unsafe situations or work practices and
notifying your Supervisor or Manager (or the Health, Safety Manager/Area Safety
Representative); never performing a task that you believe is dangerous or for which
you do not have the experience, or have not received appropriate instructions and
training or where the correct equipment to carry out the task safely is not available;
always work in a safe manner and in accordance with safety instructions, where
applicable; use the work equipment supplied for the job, in accordance with the

manufacturer's instructions), and any personal protective equipment, which the
Council deems necessary and has provided; be safety aware and report any actions
to your line manager which will assist the Council to meet its legal workplace health
and safety obligations.

You have the right to cease or direct cessation of unsafe work. In addition, you are
required at all times to comply with Councils Asbestos Management Plan and Policy.

Compliance & Risk

(some roles may have more specific Compliance & Risk responsibilities, eg: Team
Leaders, Managers, Directors, specialist etc).

COMMUNICATION

The Animal Shelter Attendant will have good oral & written communication skills to
liase with a wide variety of people from the local and wider community. Excellent
customer service skills with an approachable manner and team work are core.

JUDGEMENT & PROBLEM SOLVING

The Animal Shelter Attendant will have good judgement & problem solving in their
area of responsibility. For example: observing animals for injury, illness or
behavioural problems and reporting to supervisors accordingly.

AUTHORITY

This person reports directly to the Animal Facility Coordinator
