**The Opportunity**

The Assistant Director works across the Eastern Group which encompasses spectacular landscape, beautiful scenery and vibrant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures from far north Queensland to New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. The role oversees a team providing specialist advisory and support services to the Eastern Group Manager, Operations and Delivery division and the agency more broadly.

The position works with considerable independence and under broad direction of the Director. Together, they lead the development of special projects across the division and group, providing expertise across a broad range of activities including interagency forums, cross-commonwealth projects and improvement to internal operating systems.

The role is closely tied to Priority Reforms under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap and includes the following duties:

- Lead a small team including managing staff performance and development.
- Develop and maintain complex internal and external relationships with key NIAA stakeholders.
- Manage secretariat responsibilities for interagency meetings including strategic planning and coordination.
- Facilitate the development and implementation of complex and specialist projects as advised by the Group Manager to enhance delivery of outcomes for First Nations people.
- High level of cultural acumen and understanding of issues affecting First Nations people including Priority Reforms under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills and a demonstrated ability to develop positive and productive relationships internally as well as with external stakeholders across jurisdictions.
- Demonstrated experience providing secretariat support for interagency meetings.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills including experience drafting high quality and complex reports, briefings and presentations and providing quality assurance.
- Ability to manage a broad range of issues and provide quality advice working under time pressures to meet deadlines.
- Ability to effectively supervise staff and provide constructive management with a focus on capability development, team building and leadership.
