- The EL1 Assistant Director, Financial Operations is responsible for leading and managing a small to medium sized team of staff to ensure service and processing standards are met, and associated audit / reconciliation functions are performed accurately, completely and on time.
- The role includes the management of staff and setting performance standards, coaching / mentoring, prioritising the teams’ activities to achieve outputs, performing complex tasks, troubleshooting and quality control and audit activities.
- You will work collaboratively with the Director, your peers / stakeholders, lead by example, and work across the branch and the Department and beyond, to build effective partnerships.

**Who we are**
The **Finance and Investment Division** supports the department to be efficient, effective, and financially sustainable. The division provides strategic financial advice and support to the department, the offices of the minister and to industry stakeholders. The division delivers on business objectives by partnering with the department, providing high quality customer service, advice and support and a nationally consistent approach to business, with consideration to the government’s fiscal environment, its significant reform agenda, and the department’s imperative to maintain financial sustainability.

The **Financial Operations Branch** provide essential services to enable to department and its stakeholders to meet their financial and operational requirements to achieve positive outcomes for the environment, water management and agriculture sector. The functions within the branch include payroll, procurement, contract management, accounts payable / receivable, grants administration support, travel / expense management, and finance systems administration.

Our teams are nationally dispersed, work in a high-volume processing environment, provide excellent customer service to support the department through the payment, receipt and processing of billions of dollars each year. **The Job**
The role is responsible for, but not limited to:

- Managing a small to medium sized team of finance staff to ensure timely service and process standards are met including performance management and coaching / mentoring.
- Being responsible for the team’s end of month, quarterly, annual and ad hoc reports and analysis of data.
- Cultivating and promoting productive working relationships with stakeholders, clients / vendors and colleagues.
- Maintaining an understanding of whole of government and departmental financial policies, procedures and guidelines to which the team operates particularly as they relate to the function your team delivers.
- Being responsible for the continuous business improvement, including proposing and implementing changes to processes and functions as they relate to the branch and the wider division.

**Please note** that the merit pool established through this selection process, which is valid for a period of eighteen months from the date the vacancy was advertised in the Public Service Gazette, may also be used to fill future ongoing vacancies in the branch where the duties are of a similar nature.

**Knowledge and experience**
- Knowledge of, or the ability to quickly acquire, Commonwealth (Whole of Government) and departmental financial policies, procedures and guidelines to which the function the position leads operates under.
- General understanding of related Commonwealth policies and legislation such as procurement, and contract management.
- Experience managing a small to medium team of financial operations staff to ensure timely service and processing of payments as it relates to the function you lead.
- This includes building a positive, customer focussed team, who are solution driven, and have clarity on their roles, responsibilities, expected performance and behaviours.
- Experience using a commercial financial system to undertake processing such as TechnologyOne (desirable, where applicable).
