**Who we are**
Biosecurity Operations Division (BOD) delivers nationally integrated biosecurity and imported food regulatory activities to ensure goods, conveyances and travellers meet Australia's import requirements. Division operations include policy and regulatory control setting across imported food and biosecurity risk pathways, as well as the delivery of assessment, inspection, community engagement and contact centre services. The division also partners with industry to improve the delivery of regulatory functions. The division spans a range of regulatory activities that plays a critical role in reducing risk and shaping our nation to become one of the few countries in the world to remain free from the world’s most severe pests and diseases.

Traveller Policy and Operations & Human Health develops and implements policy and controls to manage biosecurity and human health risks at the border. The pathway also works to address emerging post border biosecurity detections and deliver integrated system solutions to facilitate/support effective regulation across traveller and mail trade pathways.

The Cargo Operations Pathway delivers regulatory assessment and inspections of goods, across the biosecurity continuum (offshore, at the border and onshore) to verify compliance with Australia's biosecurity and imported food requirements. Cargo Operations Pathway works with policy and risk owners within the department to influence and inform operational policy and deliver regulatory functions in accordance with legislative requirements, national standards and within an integrated, risk-based operating model. The group has a national footprint with a presence in all capital cities and major regional ports. Cargo Operations Pathway includes the Client Contact Group, Cargo Assessments and Cargo Inspections.

Travellers Operations delivers regulatory screening and inspections of travellers and their goods, at the border to verify compliance with Australia's biosecurity requirements. Travellers Operations works with policy and risk owners within the department to influence and inform operational policy and deliver regulatory functions in accordance with legislative requirements, national standards, and a risk-based operating model. The operations group has a national footprint with a presence at international airports and seaports in all capital cities.

Cargo Operations Inspections are responsible for the inspection of imported food, goods, vessels, aircraft, animals and animal genetic material and the assessment of documentation to confirm compliance with Australia’s biosecurity and export market requirements. The team are also responsible for managing goods that do not comply with import/export requirements and capturing information to support evidence-based decisions. Cargo Inspections mainly operate within core business hours between 06:30 and 18:30, with overtime available outside of these hours where required. Additional wage allowances are provided for working outdoors and at wharf environments.

**The Job**
The role of an Assistant Director is to provide leadership to support the achievement of regulatory outcomes in line with the department’s business plan and BOD strategic direction. The successful applicants will need to influence change, while contributing to business planning and decision-making processes. They will also be required to demonstrate innovative leadership while providing support to and leading managers and teams in a regulatory environment. Responding to issues that arise outside of normal working hours may be required. Depending upon the role, duties may include all or some of the following:

- Leading and taking responsibility for teams delivering regulatory services within geographically dispersed locations.
- Building capability of teams through coaching, performance feedback, conflict resolution and career development.
- Engaging and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to identify opportunities, achieve outcomes and facilitate cooperation.
- Undertaking strategic planning to meet business objectives in line with sound decision making.
- Effectively manage competing priorities including delivering on complex project outcomes.
- Managing and developing well-researched policy and complex policy advice.
- Preparing reports, briefing papers, Ministerial correspondence and discussion papers.
- Promoting the APS Values, the APS Employment Principles and compliance with the Code of Conduct.
