**The Role**
Defence Export Controls (DEC) is recruiting across a range of positions for current and expected vacancies. DEC regulates the export and supply of military and dual-use goods, software and technologies and makes around 4,000 assessments and decisions per year. Our work spans the fields of technical and risk assessments, evidence-based decision making, international and domestic engagement, regulatory and compliance functions, and policy development. The roles demand well developed analytic skills, aptitude for stakeholder engagement and risk based assessment in a high tempo environment. Further details on each of DEC’s functions is provided below.

DEC supports a number of key Defence objectives consistent with Australia's national interest. These objectives include: supporting industry, academia, government and individuals to export responsibly; preventing regional and international instability and conflict; ensuring Australia upholds its international obligations through the responsible export of military and dual-use goods and technology; and preventing the irresponsible or illicit trade of conventional weapons or the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

**About our Team**
Defence Export Controls has four sections that undertake a wide range of regulatory, risk and technical assessments and engagement functions (domestic and international).

We are recruiting to the following sections:
1. Defence Export Assessments and Regimes (DEAR)

2. Regulatory Affairs and Compliance (RAC)
RAC is responsible for most of DEC's stakeholder engagement and outreach activities with industry, academia and research institutions and provides the first point of contact for Defence export related inquiries. RAC undertakes regulatory compliance functions including investigations of potential noncompliance with Australia’s export regulations and works closely with the Australian Border Force and the Australian Federal Police.

3. Technical Assessments (TA)
TA is responsible for determining the export control status of a wide range of military and dual-use items, software and technology. The TA team lead Australia’s technical contributions to multilateral export control regimes, driving the development of international and Australian export controls. TA also works closely with RAC, participating in outreach activities with industry, academia and research institutions.

4. Export Controls Policy and Governance
DEC’s Policy team is responsible for advising on export control regulatory policy and legislative matters. The team develops and coordinates input to export control policy issues to internal and external stakeholder. The team contributes to whole-of-government regulatory initiatives that intersect with export controls, as well as DEC’ broader engagement activities with domestic and international partners. The team also provides legal advice through the embedded Senior Legal Officer.

The ability to undertake risk based assessments is critical. Some roles require technical qualifications to assess military and/or dual-use goods and technologies.

Experience in regulation, compliance, policy and international relations, would be well regarded.
