**Who we are**
The International Environment, Reef and Ocean Division leads and influences Australia’s engagement on a range of environment related international agreements and treaties - including those relating to oceans, wildlife trade and migratory species - and oversees a range of Pacific environment programs. The division contributes to the protection and sustainable management of Australia’s wildlife, ocean, marine and migratory species, and the Great Barrier Reef. The division comprises the International Environment Branch, the Great Barrier Reef Branch and the Ocean and Wildlife Branch.

The Ocean and Wildlife Branch is responsible for the conservation, protection and sustainable management of the environment. The Branch also assesses the environmental performance of commercial harvest operations of Australian marine (including commercial fisheries) and terrestrial wildlife consistent with the requirements of the EPBC Act. The Branch is leading delivery of Australia’s Sustainable Ocean Plan and providing a focal point for domestic ocean matters in the department. The Branch manages Australia’s implementation of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species - Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation of Migratory Sharks, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the List of specimens taken to be suitable for live import.

The section is also responsible for policy and program coordination of independent data validation, coral traceability and bycatch reduction projects for several fisheries operating in the Great Barrier Reef. Supporting evidence-based decision making is a focus of this section, particularly understanding and reducing risks to protected species from commercial fishing. The section contributes to strategic fisheries policy coordination and has a focus on streamlining, data assurance and ensuring decisions are nature positive to promote ecologically and economically sustainable fisheries and trade.
