The Department of Home Affairs is responsible for centrally coordinated strategy and policy leadership in relation to domestic national security arrangements, law enforcement, emergency management, counter-terrorism, social cohesion, the protection of our sovereignty, the integrity of our border and the resilience of our national infrastructure.

The Australian Border Force, an operationally independent body within the Department of Home Affairs, is Australia's frontline border law enforcement agency and Australia's customs service. The Australian Border Force's mission is to protect Australia's border and facilitate the legitimate movement of people and goods across it.

**Overview of the Australian Border Force**:
We are Australia's frontline border, law enforcement agency and customs service. We are an operationally independent body within the Home Affairs portfolio.

Our mission is to protect Australia's border and to enable legitimate travel and trade.

Our vision is to be a global leader in border law enforcement and a trusted partner that helps build a safe, secure and prosperous Australia.

We aim to facilitate the movement of people and goods across the border. We work closely with other agencies to share knowledge, expertise and intelligence in order to detect, deter and prosecute those who attempt to do us harm at the border. The work we do contributes to safeguarding Australia's national security.

**Overview of Maritime Border Command (MBC)**:
As the world’s largest and only island continent, Australia has unique responsibilities and challenges for maritime security and border management.

Our area of responsibility is both large, and environmentally diverse. The waters that MBC protect range from sub-Antarctic conditions in the southern ocean to the warm tropical waters in the north.

MBC is Australia’s lead civil maritime authority charged with securing Australia’s vast maritime border. MBC is enabled by both the Australian Border Force (ABF) and the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and tasked to protect Australia’s national interests by responding with assigned forces to undertake civil maritime security operations to detect, deter, and respond to illegal activities in the Australian Maritime Domain.

We have regular contact with over 30 partners across State, Territory and Commonwealth Governments, we work with industry and we engage regularly with international partners.

MBC is a multi-agency taskforce located in Canberra comprising ABF officers and personnel from the three services of the ADF, with staff blended across the following directorates; Chief of Staff, Commitments, Plans, Operations and Intelligence, each of which contributes to the achievement of our operations and mission. Personnel attached to MBC, whether ABF, ADF or from other government agencies, operate as a blended team to deliver an integrated operational effect.

The MBC Intelligence Centre (MBCIC) is one of five directorates within MBC and provides intelligence advice to inform MBC operational activity. As such, the MBCIC is responsible for collecting, processing, integrating, evaluating, and analysing information and intelligence specific to Australia’s maritime domain. Some intelligence staff are located within the ABOC providing 24/7 365 day support to operations.

This directorate is a multi-disciplinary team comprising both ABF and ADF personnel. The MBCIC is responsible for providing intelligence related to the full range of civil maritime security threats as specified in the Guide to Australian Maritime Security Arrangements (GAMSA). Within the MBCIC there are four intelligence teams including, the Strategic Intelligence (STRATINT) Team, the Operations Intelligence (OPINT) Team, the INTEL PLANS Team, and the Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) Team. Collectively, these teams are responsible for:

- Providing timely, intelligence advice to inform current operations in the Australian Maritime Domain
- Understanding, analysing and assessing transnational threats to Australia
- Providing intelligence advice to support MBC’s Plans and Commitments Directorates
- Engaging with domestic and international partners to better understand the eight civil maritime security threats as specified in the GAMSA
- Supporting the conduct of operations and exercises through the development of intelligence assessments and supporting products
