Net Zero Project Officer

1. To assist in the development, implementation and review of sustainability policies
and strategies, programs and projects_. _
2. To develop and project manage appropriate sustainability projects and programs
to deliver on Councils vision and targets.
3. To develop and deliver Council’s sustainability behavior change, education and
promotion programs.
4. To work across council and community, including the planetary health team, to
maximise the benefits from projects.
**RELATIONSHIPS
**Reports to: Sustainability Advisor**
**Staff Responsibility: Casual Sustainable Living Education Officers as**
**required**
**Key Internal Relationships**:
- Support the Sustainability Advisor to deliver
sustainability outcomes in accordance with
Council’s vision, strategies and targets.***
- Liaises with Corporate Communications and
Marketing Branch to develop and implement
behavior change campaigns.

- Liaise with Strategic Outcomes & Project
Branch, property and assets and other relevant
Council staff to produce, interpret and report on
delivery of outcomes against strategies.
- Liaises with staff delivering services.***
**Key External Relationships**:
- Contractors providing sustainability / carbon
abatement services.
- Professional staff of Government and
regulatory agencies such as the NSW
Environment Protection Agency.
- Peer industry technical bodies.
- Consultants providing professional services.***
- Community groups.
**SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES**
1) Develop, prepare and administer project/contract documentation including project
plans, briefs, specifications and contracts.
2) Manage consultancies and assist in managing contracts on specific and ongoing
sustainability projects.
3) Identify and implement opportunities to embed sustainability into Council’s
operations particularly opportunities to reduce carbon emissions.
4) Research locally, nationally and internationally best practice carbon abatement
initiatives / strategies, policies, programs, projects and reports.
5) Review, develop and implement strategies and programs that will assist in achieving
carbon emissions reduction from operations and the community.
6) Promote community awareness, support and involvement in reducing carbon
emissions including the preparation of media releases and other educational
information (eg web and social media content, notices, print publications), attending
events, festivals and community training programs on appropriate best practice
carbon abatement projects.
7) Ensure adequate and appropriate stakeholder consultation and engagement for
relevant projects and contracts.
8) Review and update website content and develop improvements.
9) Keep abreast of legislative and other changes affecting the operations and
responsibilities of the Waste & Sustainability Team.
10) Liaise with relevant Council staff, State government agencies, regional local
government bodies and authorities and community groups as required.
11) Contribute to the preparation and review of relevant policies and strategies.
12) Assist in seeking external funding including grants for relevant projects.
13) Respond to and resolve Customer Requests and enquiries as required.
**Workplace Health & Safety**
Ensure compliance with WHS obligations and responsibilities as outlined in Councils
policies and procedures and under the relevant WHS legislation. These include but are
not limited to:
- identifying potentially unsafe situations or work practices and notifying your Supervisor
or Manager (or the Health, Safety Manager/Area Safety Representative);
- never performing a task that you believe is dangerous or for which you do not have
the experience, or have not received appropriate instructions and training or where the
correct equipment to carry out the task safely is not available;
- always work in a safe manner and in accordance with safety instructions, where
applicable;
- use the work equipment supplied for the job, in accordance with the manufacturer's
instructions), and any personal protective equipment, which the Council deems
necessary and has provided; and
- be safety aware and report any actions to your line manager which will assist the
Council to meet its legal workplace health and safety obligations.
You have the right to cease or direct cessation of unsafe work. In addition you are required
at all times to comply with Councils Asbestos Management Plan and Policy.
**COMMUNICATION**
The position will be responsible for maintaining productive links both internally and
externally. Communication will be across a broad spectrum of stakeholders, from the
public / community, through professional staff / peers to the Program Leader Sustainability
and Waste.
Where the advice and liaising extends to policy areas, project development and service
performance, written reports will also be involved. Reports to Council and external
agencies will need to be prepared under limited guidance.
