First Nations Communication and Engagement Officer

Blue Mountains City covers the traditional lands of the Dharug and Gundungurra First
Nations people. Council has an opportunity for a highly experienced communication,
engagement and education practitioner to help plan and deliver community engagement
strategies with Traditional Owners and the First Nations community in the Blue Mountains
to ensure meaningful First Nations consultation occurs across Council’s key projects and
strategic planning activities The position will also design and deliver internal First Nations
cultural awareness training and assist in facilitating council wide implementation of the
Statement of Recognition and Commitment and Closing the Gap initiatives
The role involves working with many project teams across Council, as well as Traditional
Owners and the First Nations community. To succeed in this role you must have excellent
project management skills, stakeholder management skills and customer service. You
must also be able to provide strategic advice in regards to formulating community
engagement.

**Key Internal Relationships**:First Nations team, Communications & Marketing
team, Managers, Project Managers, Team Leaders
and Officers across the organisation.
**Key External Relationships**:Dharug and Gundungurra Traditional Owners
(individuals and groups), organisations representing
First Nations peoples, and individuals of the City’s First
Nations community, Government agencies and other
external stakeholders.
**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The First Nations Communications & Engagement Coordinator is responsible for:
- Providing a lead role in culturally appropriate communication and engagement with
Traditional Owners and First Nations people in the City.
- Developing and managing frameworks and process that supports culturally
appropriate and effective communication and engagement with Traditional Owners
and First Nations people in the City.
- Working with project managers across the organisation to effectively plan high quality
First Nations engagement strategies.
- Planning, scheduling and promoting community engagement activities (online, print
and in person) across the various projects.
- Working with project managers to ensure relevant First Nations
stakeholders/individuals are engaged in a meaningful and culturally appropriate way ,
at the appropriate time throughout the lifecycle of a project, and informed of the
decision-making process and outcome.
- Providing coordination, logístical, tracking and reporting services for community
engagement projects to enable efficient and effective consultation and communication
with the First Nations community and / or internal stakeholders.
- Helping to build strong and inclusive First Nations community relationships on the
identified projects.
- Liaising with relevant Council staff, Federal and State Government agencies, and
community groups as required.

**WORKPLACE HEALTH AND SAFETY
**Ensure compliance with WHS obligations and responsibilities as outlined in Councils
policies and procedures and under the relevant WHS legislation. These include but are
not limited to identifying potentially unsafe situations or work practices and notifying your
Supervisor or Manager (or the Health, Safety Manager/Area Safety Representative);
never performing a task that you believe is dangerous or for which you do not have the
experience, or have not received appropriate instructions and training or where the correct
equipment to carry out the task safely is not available; always work in a safe manner and
in accordance with safety instructions, where applicable; use the work equipment supplied
for the job, in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions), and any personal
protective equipment, which the Council deems necessary and has provided; be safety
aware and report any actions to your line manager which will assist the Council to meet
its legal workplace health and safety obligations.
