**About the role**:
Join our dynamic team as an Aboriginal Hospital Liaison, where you'll play a crucial role in enhancing the hospital experience for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families. This role involves offering vital cultural support, guiding ward staff to deliver the best care, and developing effective discharge plans. You'll also act as a patient advocate, facilitating referrals to community-based supports post-discharge. Your work will take you into the ICU and ED, dealing with trauma, severe injuries, and end-of-life situations, while also supporting families through Sorry Business.
We offer flexible hours on Monday and Tuesday, with shifts ranging from 6 to 7 hours, and the possibility of additional shifts when colleagues are on leave. You'll receive initial support and orientation from a Male Aboriginal Liaison Officer and ongoing guidance from the Manager of Social Work, including participation in yarning sessions and cultural mentoring programs. There are also opportunities to contribute to working parties and committees focused on improving the experience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients. **Where you'll be working**:
Our successful applicant will join a small team of Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officers (AHLOs) dedicated to providing cultural support to inpatients and their families. The JHH AHLOs collaborate closely with their counterparts at JHCH and the Palliative Care Aboriginal Health worker, with office space situated within the Social Work Department, fostering strong support and collaborative relationships with Social Workers.
This position offers the chance to work at the largest local health district in NSW, which serves a population exceeding 900,000 across the Hunter, New England, and Lower Mid North Coast areas. John Hunter Hospital, a Level 6 tertiary referral, major trauma, and teaching hospital, stands as the largest hospital within the Hunter New England Local Health District.

- You will be connected to your community, have an understanding of community resources and organisations and be passionate about enhancing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patient experience at John Hunter Hospital.
- You will use a number of computer based programs so computer skills and ability to learn new programs are integral to parts of the position.

**Requirements and additional information**:
- Holds or aspires to hold a minimum Certificate III qualification in Aboriginal Primary Health Care or a minimum Certificate III health qualification in the area of care in which the Aboriginal Health Worker works.
- Eligible to drive in NSW and the ability to travel as required.
