**About the Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences**
The Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences is a leader in agricultural, food and veterinary science education and research in Australia.
- The faculty comprises the Melbourne Veterinary School and the School of Agriculture and Food. The faculty operates across three campuses: Parkville, Werribee and Dookie. We acknowledge and pay respect to the traditional owners of the lands upon which these campuses are situated, the Wurundjeri and Boon Wurrung peoples and the Yorta Yorta Nation. In addition to education and research, the faculty operates a veterinary hospital at Werribee, a broadacre farm at Dookie, and an equine hospital in Shepparton.
**About the Role**
- The Laboratory Officer will be responsible for managing the laboratories used for teaching and research within the Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Melbourne.- The role is responsible for the day to day operations of the Faculty’s laboratories across a range of veterinary and agricultural disciplines.- Reporting to and working under the direction of the relevant manager, this position will work collaboratively with other Laboratory Officers and Laboratory Managers to provide technical support to teaching and learning activities, and ensure that the Faculty’s laboratories, whether used for teaching or research, are safe, compliant and in full operational order. This role does not carry out research activities. The role is also required to contribute to continual development of systems for improved service delivery.Responsibilities may include:
- Maintain laboratory facilities, equipment and materials in optimal operational condition, consistent with all relevant compliance frameworks and accreditation requirements-
- Maintain accurate records and inventories of laboratory activities and assets including induction records, equipment maintenance records and inventories for equipment and chemicals-
- Work flexibly and collaboratively as part of the team, including providing back-fill for the team, as directed by the relevant manager- Proactively identify opportunities for service improvement in conjunction with the laboratory officer/managers and other senior professional staff
**About You**
You will have well-developed interpersonal and communication skills with proven ability to liaise professionally and effectively with a diverse range of people at all levels. You will possess excellent written communication skills with proven ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail, resulting in consistent and timely preparation of reports, correspondence and tasks. You will also have a high level of flexibility, enthusiasm and initiative, along with the ability and willingness to learn new skills and undertake new tasks as required. Experience with the aseptic handling and culturing of microbiological samples is desirable but not essential.
You will also have:
- Relevant degree or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training
- A sound understanding of the regulatory requirements of working in a laboratory including those related to EHS, OGTR and Bio-security regulations
- Proven ability to work autonomously and effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team on a flexible roster to achieve goals and objectives
- Demonstrated ability to work under general direction within a busy and changing environment
