About us
The Queensland Fire Department (QFD) provides fire prevention, preparedness and response services to fire in the built and landscape environments, as well as scientific and specialist capabilities to Queensland communities. The QFD provides a multi-hazard emergency response, including road crash rescue, bushfire, hazardous material, technical and vertical rescue, severe weather incidents, remote and swiftwater rescue, and provides a number of functions supporting community safety outcomes.
The department encompasses Queensland Fire and Rescue (QFR), Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ), as well as the broader department which work together to pre-empt, prevent, mitigate and manage the consequences of fires and other emergencies on Queensland communities and support our large volunteer membership across the state.
The QFD is an organisation that is focused on reframing the department's relationship with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities, and organisations through the Path to Treaty, Closing the Gap and building our cultural capability.
Purpose of role
Incident Management (IM) Capability Readiness delivers on QFD emergency management strategies through effective operational coordination and ongoing analysis of a variety of tactical, operational and strategic incident management functions. The primary focus is developing the future IM readiness needs for the organisation and building relationships with internal and external stakeholders and exercising systems to support operational preparedness, response and recovery, including review of operational plans to ensure they are flexible and scalable to manage all hazards. The team contributes to reviewing QFD' capability readiness and capacity preparedness as per the IM Training Framework for bushfire and severe weather activities within the state operational coordination environment.
Reporting to the Executive Manager, you will be a key member of the team providing advanced administrative support to the functions of the unit, including to contribute to the review, development and implementation of policies, procedures, systems and communications to meet business objectives. You will work with internal and external stakeholders to ensure state operational readiness, including logistics, planning and reporting meets organisational requirements and contributes to high quality preventative and responsive services in accordance with QFD strategies and community expectations.

- Have a current Certificate IV in Training and Assessment qualification or can obtain the skill within a mutually agreed timeframe.
- High level understanding of Australasian Inter-Service Incident Management System (AIIMS) and QFD operational concepts.
- Demonstrated knowledge and/or experience working in an operational coordination centre along with knowledge or the ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of QLD Disaster Management arrangements (QDMA).
- Hold or the ability to obtain, Level 1 Procurement Queensland Government purchasing qualification.
Special requirements
- It is expected that the incumbent will participate in an out-of-hours roster during emergency event operations. This may require work outside of normal working hours (e.g. night shift), including weekends, working extended hours and may include deployment to other parts of the state.
Your key accountabilities
Your part in the ongoing success of our department, in supporting key frontline services will see you responsible for a variety of work, including, but not limited to:
- Provide high level administrative and project support, including maintaining document management systems, filling and financial administration to ensure business objectives are achieved.
- Provide management support for state operational readiness, including logistics, planning and reporting in relations to disaster and emergency operations across all levels of QDMA.
- Assist with the delivery of training and assessment programs, including review, development and implementation of systems to support operational readiness capability and capacity.
- Develop and implement best practice strategies, directions and objectives to enhance service delivery and operational capability, and monitor outcomes against performance during activation.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure IM capability readiness information is shared between regions, other emergency services and agencies through timely communication and liaison.
- Assist in the preparation and review of reports, briefing notes, submissions departmental or other correspondence, in accordance with organisational requirements.
