Research Assistant, Quantum Sensing
Overview:
- Full-time, fixed term position for one year- Salary Academic Level A-B dependant on experience ($98,122 - $131,659) + 17% Superannuation- Based at the Melbourne CBD, but may be required to work and/or be based at other campuses of the University
- About You
- The Research Assistant will undertake research activities in the area of solid-state radiofrequency-optical quantum transducers.
- The project is funded by the Department of Defence, and is a close collaboration with two companies, Diamond Defence and Phasor Innovation. You will work in a team of researchers and engineers employed across RMIT and the two industry partners to research and develop radiofrequency (RF) receivers and spectrum analysers that rely on optically active quantum spins housed in a wide bandgap material to convert an input RF signal into an optical signal. Two specific quantum transducer materials will be explored in the project: diamond containing nitrogen-vacancy spins, and hexagonal boron nitride containing isotropic spins.
The project will involve the characterisation and optimisation of the quantum transducer materials, and the realisation of lab demonstrators and prototypes of the proposed quantum RF receivers and spectrum analysers, including designing the RF delivery, optical readout, signal processing, and software interface, and evaluating and optimising their performance.
- The Research Assistant may be required to supervise research students at undergraduate, Masters and PhD levels.
To be successful in this position, you will have:
- Evidence of research output including publications, conference contributions and/or technical reports in the field.- Ability to work autonomously whilst displaying a strong commitment to work in a team environment, including the demonstrated ability to confidently and effectively work with colleagues, project team leaders, and industry partners.- Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and effectively manage varying workloads and respond to changing priorities as required.- Demonstrated high level communication skills.- Experience in one or more of the following physics sub-fields: optics, atomic physics, condensed matter physics.- Strong analytical and programming skills, and ability to carry out both theoretical and experimental work.- Australian citizenship or permanent residents with citizenship from countries not sanctioned or embargoed may also be considered.
